It was said that the
temple belonged to the 11th to 12th century and was constructed with bricks. To prove the antiquity of the temple there is a
“Kazu maram” and worshiped as Kathavarayan. With this, the temple must have existed much before the 11th Century. It was said that during Saiva and
Jains ( Samanars ) religious conflict this "Kazhumaram" was used to kill the
persons who lost in the debate or defeat ( கழுவேற்றம் )
as a punishment. It is also believed that the dead man's athma lives in the Kazhumaram. This Kazhumaram was made of a Palm tree. This kazhuvetra punishment
is available as sculpture in many temples. However, experts believe that
there is no evidence to prove this Kazhuvetra punishment was given after
defeat, especially to the Jains or Samanars during the Saiva and Jain
conflict.
A 7-day festival,
from Maha Shivaratri in Tamil Masi Months, will be celebrated in a grand manner.
