Jain Beds - The remains of Jainism in a rock Shelter at Uranithangal, Senji / Gingee, Thiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu. st AHIMSA WALK ( A HERITAGE WALK ) WITH TAMIL JAINS

We,  from different geographic   regions,  unite together in one place for the celebrations, fighting for a common cause, wishing each other like brothers and sisters, may be meeting for the first time  etc,. One such happiest occasion, is  the Ahimsa walk organised by the Tamil Jains Community at Uranithangal near Senji. During my travel to Thiruvannamalai for Annamalaiyar darshan, I used to wonder how this boulder hill could  have been formed.  These haphazard stalking of boulders, makes natural caves for the human habitation, hence these caves are called as Rock shelter. Many such hills with caves are on the banks of river Thenpennai between Thirukovilur to  Tindivanam and some natural caves has the 5000 to 10000 years old rock arts painting drawn by the stone age humans.

 

I was extremely very proud to be a part of 49^th, 50^th and this 51^st Ahimsa walk team. These ahimsa walks gave me an opportunity  to understand more  about the Jainism and the Tamil jains culture in Tamil Nadu. As usual I accepted the 51^st Ahimsa walk invitation sent  by Mrs Sasikala. We, 10 members  started  from Adambakkam Jain’s Jeenalayam, Chennai around 05.30 hrs on 04^th March 2018. After picking up the rest reached Uranithangal around 08.30 hrs. This is a small village at the base of a hill before Senji from Tindivanam. I had the opportunity of having interaction with experts like Mrs and Mr Veeraraghavan, Mr Sugavana Murugan, Mr Mahatma Selvapandiyan and Mr Ramesh Kumar from French institute, Pondicherry, who was a part of the team that produced a document CD which contains the Jain’ s monuments in Tamil Nadu. It was told that the 1^st Ahimsa walk was started from this same place. After breakfast we started our Ahimsa walk from an Amman temple at the base. The walk went through two streets of the village. 100+ participants took part, from various age group, which includes Children also. Students from Villupuram Govt Arts College also participated in this ahimsa walk.

The rock shelter at Uranithangal is about  200 feet high and there is no steps to climb. Thorny  bush vegetations are grown, through out the route. Trekking to the Rock shelter through boulders made more difficult. The cool atmosphere made us to forget the troubles meet during the trekking.  The rock shelter has a wide opening on the south side. The top boulder was cut to avoid rain water to enter in side the rock shelter. The rock shelter has 18 beds with 3 flat surfaces for sitting. As per the experts the beds belongs to 04 to 5^th century CE.  The shelter has a round medicine grinding  place also. It was told that this place was once used by the Jain monks to teach the students. At the centre of the shelter, there is a foot print reliefs with Dharma chakra and Mukkudai made during 1976 CE in connection  Acharya Nirmal Sagar maharaj’s visit to this rock shelter.

The experts and scholars shared their views on the raise and fall of Jainism in Tamil Nadu. Researchers  and Former ASI officials  shared their experiences in finding the remains of Jainism in Tamil Nadu. Then we trekked down to the base camp and had our lunch. Experts and researchers and scholars were honored  in a brief  function with mementos. Even-though I am not a scholar,  I was also honored,  for which I am  very much thankful  to the  Ahimsa walk organizers and the team. I extend my sincere thanks to Mr Sridharan Appandai Raj, Mr Rajendra  Prasad, Mr Ajitha Dass, Mr Saumendar, Mrs Sasikala and Mr Babu for organizing this 51^st wonderful Ahimsa walk.  

தமிழகத்தில் எங்கெங்கோ  பிறந்த நாம் மதம், மொழியால் வேறு பட்டு இருந்தாலும் ஒரு பொது நோக்கத்திற்காக, கொண்டாடுவதற்காக, அறவழியில் போராடுவதற்காக, அண்ணன் தம்பிகளாக, சகோதர, சகோதரிகளாக ஒன்று கூடுகின்றோம். அப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு நிகழ்வு தான் தமிழ் சமண சகோதரர்களால் திண்டிவனத்தில் இருந்து திருவண்ணாமலை செல்லும் சாலையில் அமைந்துள்ள ஊரணிகுப்பத்தில் நடத்தப்பட்ட அஹிம்சை நடை. இம்மலையை திருவண்ணாமலைக்கு செல்லும் சமயத்தில்.எல்லாம் ஒரு ஒழுங்கற்ற முறையில் கற்பாறைகளைக் குவியலாகக் கொட்டியது போல இருப்பதைக்கண்டு, எப்படி, எவ்வளவு காலத்திற்க்கு முன்பு இவ்வாறு ஏற்ப்பட்டு இருக்கலாம் என எண்ணி வியந்து இருக்கின்றேன். இம்மாதிரியான கல் மலைகள் திருக்கோவிலூரில் இருந்து திண்டிவனம் வரை தென்பென்னை நதியின்கரையில் இருப்பதைக் காண முடிகின்றது. அந்தமலைகளில் இயற்கையாக அமைந்த குகைகள் கற்கால மனிதர்களின் வாழ்விடங்களாக இருந்ததையும், அதற்கு சாட்சியாக அதில் உள்ள 5000 முதல் 10000 ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் பழைமையான பாறை ஓவியங்களையும் கண்டு இருக்கின்றேன்.

ஊரணிகுப்பத்தில் உள்ள மலையிலும் இயற்கையாக அமைந்த பாறை வாழ்விடத்தில் தான் இந்த 51வது அஹிம்சை நடை நடந்தது. முதல் அஹிம்சை நடையும் இதே இடத்தில் தான் நடத்தப்பட்டது என்று கூறினர். 49வது மற்றும் 50வது அஹிம்சை நடையில் கலந்து கொண்ட நான் இந்த 51வது அஹிம்சை நடையிலும் கலந்து கொள்வதை மிகவும் பெருமையாகக் கருதுகின்றேன். திருமதி சசிகலாவின் அறிவிப்பினைத் தொடர்ந்து  கடந்த ஞாயிரு 04, மார்ச் மாதம்  காலை சுமார் 5.30 மணிக்கு ஆதம்பாக்கத்தின் ஜீனாலயத்தில் இருந்து எங்கள் பயணம் துவங்கியது. வழியில் சிலரையும் ஏற்றிக்கொண்டு சுமார் 08.30 மணிஅளவில் ஊரணிதாங்கல் சென்றடைந்தோம்.. 

காலை சிற்றுண்டிக்கு பின்பு ஊரணிதாங்கல் இரு வீதிகளின் வழியாக 51வது அஹிம்சைநடை தொன்மையான வரலாற்று சின்னங்களை பாதுகாக்க வலியுறுத்தியும், அப்படி பாதுகாத்துவரும் அவ்வூர் மக்களை வாழ்த்தியும் கோஷம் எழுப்பியபடி நடந்தது. சுமார் நூற்றுக்கும் அதிகமான மக்கள் கலந்து கொண்டனர். இதில் சமண மதத்தினருடன் மற்ற சமயத்தினரும் வயது வித்தியாசம் இன்றி கலந்து கொண்டனர். மேலும் வரலாற்று ஆய்வாளர்கள், ஆர்வலர்கள்,  தொல்லியல் துறையில் பணிபுரிந்து ஓய்வு பெற்றவர்கள், ஆசிரியர்கள், பள்ளி கல்லூரி மாணவர்கள் கலந்து கொண்டது மிகவும் சிறப்பு. ஆய்வாளர்கள் அய்யா வீரராகவன், திருமதி மங்கை வீரராகவன், திரு சுகவன முருகன், திரு மகாத்மா செல்வபாண்டியன் ஆகிய அனைவரும் கலந்து கொண்ட  இந்த அஹிம்சை நடையில்,  நானும் கலந்து கொண்டது மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சியை அளித்தது. அஹிம்சை நடை மலையின் அடிவாரத்தில் உள்ள அம்மன் கோவிலில் முடிவடைந்தது.

சமணமுனிவர்கள் தங்கி, கல்வி கற்ப்பித்த, மற்றும் மருத்துவம் பார்த்த இயற்கையாக அமைந்த குகையை நோக்கி எங்கள் மலை ஏற்றம் துவங்கியது. ஒழுங்கற்ற பாதையில் பாறைகளின் மீது ஏறி இறங்குவது மிகவும் கடினமாக இருந்தது. மேலும் அப்பாறைகளின் ஊடே வளர்ந்திருந்த முள் புதர்கள் இலக்கை அடைவதற்க்கு தடையாக இருந்தது. போதாததிற்க்கு சூரியனின் உக்கிரம் நாக்கை வறட்டியது... குகையை அடைந்த உடன் அதன் குளுமை எங்கள் மலை ஏற்ற சிரமத்தை மறக்கடிக்கச் செய்தது. . குகையில் 18 சமண முனிவர்களின் படுக்கைகள் வெட்டப்பட்டு இருந்தது. ஆச்சாரியார் அமர்ந்து மாணாக்கர்களுக்கு பாடம் நடத்துவதற்கு ஏதுவாக சமதளமும் தனியாக அமைக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தது. இவைகள் 4-5ம் நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முற்ப்பட்டதாக இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று அறிஞர்கள் கூறினர். குகையின் நடுவே 1976ல் ஆச்சாரியார்  நிர்மல் சாகர் மகராஜ் அவர்களின் வருகையை ஒட்டி அவர் பாதம், தர்ம சக்கரம் மற்றும்  முக்குடையும் செதுக்கப்படு இருந்தது. எல்லோரும் வந்தபின்பு அறிஞர்கள், சமணமதம் பற்றி தங்கள் கருத்துக்களையும், ஆய்வாளர்கள், தொல்லியல் துறையில் இருந்து ஓய்வு பெற்ற அதிகாரிகள் தங்களுடைய சமணம் சார்ந்த அனுபவங்களையும் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டனர், 

சுமார் இரண்டு மணி அளவில் மலை அடிவாரத்திற்கு இறங்கத் துவங்கினோம். மதிய உணவுக்குப்பின்பு சிறிய கூட்டத்தில் அறிஞர்களும் ஆய்வாளர்களும். கவுரவிக்கப்பட்டனர்.  வெறும் ஆர்வலரான என்னையும் அக்கூட்டத்தில் சிறப்பிக்கப்பட்டதை ஒரு பெரும் பேறாகக் கருதுகின்றேன். இந்த அஹிம்சை நடை நடத்துனர்கள் திரு ஸ்ரீதரன் அப்பாண்டைராஜ், திரு அஜிததாஸ், திரு ராஜேந்திர பிரசாத், திரு செளமேந்திரன், திருமதி சசிகலாதேவி, திரு பாபு. மற்றும் இந்த அஹிம்சை நடை சிறப்பாக அமையச் செய்த அனைவருக்கும் என் உளம் கனிந்த நல் வாழ்த்துக்களும், நன்றிகளும்.
