Gnanapragasam Tank, A Chidambaram Local History, Chidambaram, Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu.

15th July 2018.
On the way to Thillai Natarajar Temple, opposite Sekkizhar Manimandapam at Chidambaram, we came across this tank with an inscription pillar written in English and Tamil. It is evident that not only did the kings excavate tanks, build dams, etc., for social causes, but Common people with kind hearts also participated. Most of the surviving old temples will have the contributions of Nattukottai Nagarathars and are very well known for their Charity. One such work is the excavation of this Gnanapragasam Tank for the use of the General public. We do not know, whether the donors survive to date or not, but their fame will be there till the tank exists.

As per the inscription...
This tank was gifted by Mr Raman Chettiar son of C.A.C Chinnakaruppan Chettiar belongs to Iraniyur kovil, Kothamangalam. Executed by Sri Paranjothi Swamigal, Madathipathi of Sri Ponnambala Swami Mutt, Chidambaram. This tank was opened by Mr. S Muthiah Mudaliar  B.A., B.L., M.L.C, Minister of Public Health & exercise, Madras on 31st Friday, August 1928.
