A 9th Century Chozha period Vana Durgai Amman Temple, in KONGU NADU.

31st July 2018.
On the way to Erode from Karur, we happened to visit this temple. The temple is facing east. The Sanctum sanctorum consists of a Sanctum and a front open mandapa.

The Vana Durgai is in the form of a bas-relief. Durgai is in a standing posture on the Demon Mahishan’s head. While the upper two hands hold discus/ Chakra  & Conch, the lower right hand is Abhaya Hastha, and the left-hand keeps the waist ( Katya Vilambita hastha ). It is interesting to note that the chakra and Conch are interchanged from the general iconography. The Simha is standing on the right side of her leg. As per the experts, this Vana Durgai belongs to the 9th century early Chozha period.
