This
visit to this Srinivasa Ramanujan Museum, a great Mathematical genius of our Country,
was a part of Royapuram Heritage Walk. The museum is at 15/9, Somu Chetty, 4th lane, Royapuram. This Museum was founded in 1991 by PK Srinivasan and Secretary ATB Bose. It has
the collection of rare Photos, letters, manuscripts of Ramanujan’s works. When
PK Srinivasan was in search of a place to display to the public, ATB Bose came
to his rescue and offered his own property. The Museum is governed by MAT Educational Trust (Avvai kalai Kazhagam Building run by the Mahamayi Ammal Thangappa Nadar Kalvi Valarchi Arakattalai,) an educational Trust. It has a display rooms with a
library on the 1st and 2nd floor and a auditorium in
ground floor.
A
brief history of Srinivasa Ramanujan. Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in 1887 at KONGU NADU, ERODE, kottai theppa kulam area in his maternal grand mother's home. He
was a brilliant student during School days. At the age of 16 he was fascinated
by a book titled 'A synopsis of elementary results in pure and applied
mathematics', which changed his entire life. He could not pass other subjects except Maths,
since he was immersed only in Mathematics.
Dropped out from College, supported by the friends continued his search on the mathematics
scribbling volumes and volumes of mathematical theorems on note books. It was Ramachandra Rao, an
Indian mathematician who identified his capability, offered him a scholarship and latter a job
as a clerk in Port trust with a salary Rs 30. In 1911, his 17 page first paper on Bernoulli numbers was published in Indian Mathematics Journal. In
1913 he had written a 10 page letter with theorems on infinite series to GH
Hardy a renowned England Mathematician and he approved the same in consultation
with J E Littlewood, his collaborator. This made him a popular mathematician in
India. He was offered a research Scholar job in Madras University with a double
salary ( Rs 75) and required to submit only quarterly report on his research works.
In
1914, he went to England and continued his research along with G H Hardy. He
was awarded a Bachelors Degree in Science “by research” by the Cambridge
university in 1916 ( from 1920 this degree was changed as PhD) and latter he was elected as a Fellow of Royal Society ( the
first Indian to get) 1918. During his stay in the London, he could not cope up
with the food and the harsh chilly climate. As a result his health deteriorated
and was hospitalized in 1917. In 1918, his health improved and returned to
India in 1919. On return to India he was
treated as his own son by Namberumal Chetty. Srinivasa Ramanujan stayed in one
of his house, after some days shifted to another house where he died in 1920 due to health issues. It is sad to note that this mathematical genius was fighting with health problems since birth till his death. ( further details the Ramanujam museum official web site may be referred )
