During Vijayanagara period this temple was built. The Kaikolars ( weavers ), paid many taxes. This was clubbed and asked to pay by a single tax by Ariappan and this this order in the form of palm leaves was sent to Pazhampattaraiyars of Velichai, Kundrathur, and Kasayavakkam. This place was called as Kulathur, which has got corrupted to the present name of Kolathur.
