28th
April 2019.
After the darshan of Sri Bhoomeeshwarar at Marakkanam, our plan was to visit Perumukkal.
On the way, there was a place called Brahmadesam. I was a little curious to know
more about this place, the Shiva temple, and if there is any connection to Rajaraja Chola.
Moolavar : Sri Brahmapureeswarar
Consort : Sri Periyanayaki
Some
of the salient features of this temple are...
The
temple is yet to be completed. A small temple facing east. The damaged Rishabam
and the Chandikeswarar seem to be old and belong to the Pallava period. The other Idols are kept
inside the temple.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It
was said that this was the last temple started by Rajaraja Chozha-I. This was
verified at Thanjavur Saraswathi Mahal Library and Pondicherry French
Institute. But going by the iconography of the Chandikeswarar, the temple may belong to the 7th to 8th Century Pallava period. The temple was completely reconstructed without any trace of old structures except Chandikeswarar and Moolavar.
HOW TO REACH:
The temple is about 1 km off the main road. Brahmadesam is on the Tindivanam to
Marakkanam Road.
