28th April 2019.After Kiliyanur Sri Agastheeswarar’s darshan one
of the Thevaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam, our next destination was Sri
Arasilishwarar Temple at Olunthiyapatu and another Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva
sthalam. The temple was not open and on the way, had seen many direction boards
installed for the Sri Vilavana Nathar Temple at Vilvanatham, so decided to
visit this temple. Direction sign boards are kept at almost all the turning points
of the road for easy access. Initially, we thought, the temple may be an old
one, but to our disappointment, the temple was built in recent years, but
in a different style.
Moolavar : Sri Vilva Vana Nathar Some of the salient features of this temple are...The temple is on the banks of Vilvanatham Periya
Eri. The temple faces east with a sanctum and a Mukha mandapam. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai. Ambal Sannidhi is yet to come up.
ARCHITECTUREThe sanctum
was built in Vesara / round shape and a round 3-tier Vimana is above the
sanctum. The stucco images on the vimanam make the Vimanam a little different. The Mandapa 8 pillars are attached
with big size yazhi from floor to ceiling. The balipedam and Rishabam are
in the mandapam. In the praharam, 34 Siddhar images are installed which
include, Vallalar, Pattinathar, etc. The floors and sanctums are
paved with polished granite stone slabs.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS We are a little puzzled, as to why so much money was spent
on the construction of this temple, which is very far away from human
habitation. During paddy cultivation, this temple may have a different view than
the present situation. Kumbhabhishekam was conducted in 2018.
It was understood that Pondicherry's former Chief Minister
Mr N Rangasamy for responsible for the construction of this beautiful temple. TEMPLE
