Sri Arkeshwara Temle at Honganoor, Chamarajanagar District, Karnataka.

This Visit to this 12^th to 13^th Century Sri Arkeshwara Shiva temple on 22^nd June 2019 was a part of ancient Shiva and Vishnu temples of Karnataka. This is the first temple visited in the two days program.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…

The temple is facing east  with two Nandis in front in a mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala and artha mandapam. There is an entrance on the south side with a porch supported by two pillars. The sanctum was built with pathabandha adhisthana with yazhi vari. Only Yazhivari is visible above the ground level. There is no vimana over the sanctum.

The koshtams are empty. A Dakshinamurthy statue is kept out side. Near the komuka is the Chandikeswara in standing posture and  facing west. The prastaram has the kapotham with Nasi and reliefs.  Ambal is in a separate sannadhi on the north side of the temple facing east.

There is a dilapidated mandapa is on the back side of the sanctum sanctorum. Nagars and Thavvai / Jyeshta Devi is under a tree. In addition to this there are two Hero stones installed on the south side of the temple.

HISTORY: It was told that this temple belongs to 11^th to 12^th Century Chozha period temple. Since the Adhisthana is not visible and white washed completely, inscriptions are visible.

The opening and closing times are unpredictable.

The Village Honganoor is about 20 KM from Chamarajanagar, 175 KM from Bengaluru / Bangalore and 78 KM from Mysuru / Mysore.

Nearest Railway station is Chamarajanagar.
