HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
About 450 years back, Doddacharya of Chozha Simhapuram did services to Sri Yoga Narasimhar of Sholingur. Sri Doddacharya was the descendant of Dasarathi ( who is from Chennai – Nazarathpettai, which was originally called Dasarathi Pettai), nephew of Sri Ramanujar.

Based on the architecture, this temple may be 500 to 600 years old. The pillars of the ardha mandapa and maha mandapam may belong to the Vijayanagara period. The Rajagopuram was constructed during the recent renovations.

On 1st June 2014, renovations were carried out, and Punaravatha Jirontharana Ashtabandhana Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, Karkodaka Maharishi, son of Kubera Vamsa Munthikeswarar (One of the Ashta thikku Balakas – Kubera Vamsam), worshipped Lord Shiva of this temple. To signify this, there is a snake relief on the Rishabam.

Shiva gave darshan to one of the disciples of Sri Dharma Sivachariyar, 1000 students.

It is believed that this temple is equivalent to Kasi/ Varanasi in all respects. 5 days in the Tamil month Panguni, sunlight falls on Moolavar.

Karkodaka Maharishi worshipped Lord Shiva at this temple. Hence, a Snake is shown on the base of the Rishabam.
