The
Nine Vishnu temples on the banks of river Thamirabarani in Thoothukudi district
are called as Nava Tirupati.
Nammalwar has sung pasurams on Lord Vishnu of these temples.
Hence these 9 Vishnu temples are
classified under 108 Divya Desams. These nine Vishnu temples are
associated with the Vishnu’s ten incarnations
and the planets. Thenthiruperai temple is associated with
Parasurama Avatar and the planet is Shukra ( Venus).

Some
the salient features of this temple are…
The
temple is facing east with a mandapam in front of 2 tier Rajagopuram.
Dwajasthambam, Balipeedam are after the
Rajagopuram. In Maha mandapam Urchavars
and Alwars. Garudan sannidhi is in the
maha mandapam and is not in straight line with moolavar. The sanctum sanctorum
consists of sanctum, antarala, artha mandapam and mukha mandapam. In sanctum
Moolavar is with Sridevi and Bhudevi in standing posture.
In
the outer prakara sannadhi for Sri Kuzhaikatha Nachiyar and Thiruperai
Nachiyar.
HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE
The
temple was believed to be built before Nammalwar. As per the inscriptions the
Dwajasthambam, Inner mandapam, outer mandapam and Chariot was made during the middle of 10th
Century. The Bhattars, who does daily pooja
are brought from Chozha Nadu by Sundara Pandyan. They were offered Gold
and wealth and are called as Jaimini Sama veda Dhalavakara Nootronmar ( 108 )
descendants of this place Brahmins.
ARCHITECTURE
The
sanctum sanctorum is built with simple pathabhandha adhisthana and the
adhisthana is about 2 feet below the ground level. There is no sculptures in
the koshta. The prastaram is of Kapotha with Nasikood and a 2 tier Vimana is
called as Sukran is over the sanctum. The temple was built by Pandyas and
latter completely renovated during Vijayanagara period. Mandapa Yazhi pillars
are worth to see.
After
repair and painting the temple was consecrated (Maha Samprokshanam ) on
16-06-1995.
LEGEND:
Sri
Lakshmi was upset on Lord Vishnu for
spending more time with Bhoodevi. So she complained to Durvasa and wanted the
same colour and beauty of Bhoodevi. When he met Bhoodevi and he was not given
due respect. Angered Durvasa cursed Bhoodevi to take the same colour and beauty
of Sri Lakshmi. Bhoodevi took penance at
this place and found two fish / Makara shaped ear rings. Lord Vishnu who wore the makara earrings to be known as
“MakaraNedunKuzhaikathar”. Since Bhoodevi took the form of Lakshmi due to curse
of Sage Durvasa, the place is also called as Sri Perai / ThiruPerai.

The
temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs 12.30 Hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.
