Nageswarar Temple / Nageswaraswamy Shiva Temple / ஸ்ரீ நாகேஸ்வரர் கோயில், விஜயமங்கலம், Vijayamangalam, Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

After the Jain Temple Sri 1008 Chandraprabha Tirthankara Jinalaya visit, visited this Shiva temple on 13th October 2019. This is the second visit to this temple and the first visit to this Sri Nageswarar Temple was made on 12th November 2016 and the details were recorded. In this post, the inscription details are added. During my previous visit the temple was under renovation and preparing for the Kumbhabhishekam. During this second visit, the Compound wall was under construction after Kumbhabhishekam and it was told that the old mandapam on the southeast corner would be retained and only the roof would be replaced.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
The temple faces west, with a newly built 5-tier Rajagopuram. A Deepasthambham is in front. Nagars and Vinayagar are under a Bodhi (Arasamaram) tree. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of artha mandapam, Deer and Mazhu on the left side dwarapalaka and soolam and damaru on the right side dwarapalaka. In koshtam Ganapathy, Dakshinamurthy, Durgai, Lingothbavar and Brahma.

In prakara /maha mandapam Valli Devasena sametha Sri Subramaniar, Bhairavar, a Big size Nagar and 5 Shiva Lingas of Pancha Bootha sthalangal and Chandikeswarar. Urchavars and Saba in the front mandapam.

The temple is under renovation and Saptamatrikas are removed and kept separately.

Ambal is in a separate temple and facing west. This was built during the 12th century.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTION
This temple was believed to have been constructed during the 7th to 8th Century by Cheras.

The inscriptions belongs to Veera Rajendran ( 1212 CE, 1237 CE, 1248 CE, 1249 CE ),  Veerapandian ( 1268 CE ), Sundarapandian ( 1301 CE ), Tribhuvana Veera Thevan Veera Chozhan-III ( 1172 CE ), Vikrama Chozhan-II (1259 CE ), Vikrama Chozha-III ( 1286 CE ), Ko Abimana Rajathi Rajan ( 1100 CE ), Rajathi Rajan ( 12th Century ), Veera Narayanan, Kulothunga Chozha ( 12th Century ), Kulothunga Chozha-I (12th Century ), Hoysala King Veeravallalan-III ( 14th century ) and British Queen ( 1883 CE, 19th Century – the inscription stone was broken during 2018-19 renovations ). 

As per the inscription of Vikrama Chozha-II ( 1255-1265 CE ), the temple was renovated and the inscriptions were copied and inscribed again. The inscriptions mainly speak about the donation of land, money, Sriyaki Pazhanjalakai achu, gold, towards regular Poojas, Naivedyam, excavation of eri /tank, Construction of Ambal temple,  and burning of Perpetual lamp & Sandhya Deepam. The inscription also mentions that Vijayamangalam is under Kuruppa Nadu.  

The temple was renovated during British rule in 1883 CE and the inscription stones are broken and missing now.

The temple will be kept open between 06.00 hrs to 12 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.
