Sri Kamala Narayana Perumal Temple, Kayar, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

24th November 2019.
The visit to this Sri Kamala Narayana Perumal temple was a part of the Pallava and Chozha period temples visit is scheduled for 24th November 2019. Mr Kesavan, a student and a History enthusiast gave a list of temples to be visited with important details in advance. Since this temple name was mentioned as the Village name, inquired the locals about this temple. They were guided to this temple. When we expected an old temple in a sprawling space, the temple was new and it is adjacent to a house.

HISTORY
This Village was gifted to Brahmins and called Kamala Narayana Chaturvedi Mangalam.  The presiding deity is also called Kamala Narayana Perumal. As per the inscriptions, this place was under Jayangonda Chozhamandalathu,  Kumizhi Nattu Kayar.

The original temple is believed to have been built during the 8th Century Pallava period and later rebuilt during the Chozha period. The temple was completely renovated and there is no trace of antiquity. To our surprise, we found two stones with Chozha period inscriptions placed on the top of the side wall. The width of the inscription stone was also cut to match the width of the wall. The fate of the old inscription and pillars is not known.

An incomplete Gandraditya or Sundara Chozha's 4th reign year inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp in the temple of Urudaip Perumal TirumeRRalideva, by Kandan Pudi, the headman of a Village (Name lost) in Sonadu. (SII-Volume 13 - 95, ARE 444 of 1922).

Gandraditya or Sundara Chozha 's 4th reign year Inscription records the endowment of "Sribali" offerings in the temple of Urudaip Perumal TirumeRRalideva at the Village. It also records another land for the expenses of  Thiruchchennadai ( procession for which land was gifted as tax-free, by Arinjoman,  the headman of Anaichchur in Thirunaraiyur Nadu, a subdivision of Sonadu.
