This
place Keelaperumpallam is about 4 KM from Sri Valampurinathar Temple at Melaperumallam,
a Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam. This is one of the Navagraha Sthalam for Ketu. Even though this Chozha period temple, is a Navagraha Sthalam and very close to a Paadal Petra
Sthalam, this is not either Paadal Petra Sthalam or Vaippu
Sthalam.
Thirugnanasambandar has sung hymns in praise of
Shiva of the Thirupampuram Temple. It is believed that worshipping Shiva of
Thirupampuram temple will be sufficient and is equivalent to worshipping Rahu-Ketu parihara sthalams at Kumbakonam, Nagore, Thirunageswaram, Kalahasti, and Keelaperumpallam.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

Vijayanagara Nayaka’s period.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, Devas and Asuras churned the milk ocean to get
the amirt, to live immortality. They used Mandara hill as Churn keeping on
Tortoise ( the Koorma avatar of Maha Vishnu ) and the Vasuki as string/rope.
When Devas and Asuras started churning, the Vasuki couldn’t bear the pressure
and vomited its poison. Devas collected the poison before it fell into the
milk ocean and sought Shiva’s help. Shiva Drank the Poison and before it
reached the stomach, ma Parvati stopped at the throat itself. Due to this, his
body changed into a blue color. Vasuki was feeling guilty and prayed to Shiva for her mistake. Shiva pleased with her devotion pardoned Vasuki and blessed.
Hence Shiva of this temple is called Sri Naganathaswamy.
After the Amrit was churned Swarnabanu a Demon wished to consume
the Amrit. Swarnabanu was a demon, born to Viprasithu son of Kasiba Maharishi
and Simkigai, called Simkiyen also called Swarnabanu. During the distribution
of Amrit to Devas by Maha Vishnu in the form of Mohini, Swarnabaanu ( Ketu )
changed his appearance as Deva and received Amrit sitting between Chandran and Suryan.
When this was informed to Maha Vishnu, Maha Vishnu hit Swarnabanu with the
spoon used for the distribution of Amit. On hitting, Swarnabanu, his head and body
are separated. The head has become Ketu with Naga’s body. The body has become
Rahu with a snake head. Both did penance and obtained the position of planets and
the people worship Rahu and Ketu as 8th and 9th Planets.
Devotees pray Ketu for the family problems, Child boon, Pitru dosha,
Nagadosha, marriage, etc,.
