ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardhamandpam, and a Maha
mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a prathi bandha adhistanam with jagathi
vrutha kumuda and yazhivari. The bhitti starts with vedika. Kumbha panjaras are
in karnapathi and on both sides of the koshtas. The koshtas are pathra
koshtas, little protruding outside. The makara toranas are with bas relief of
Shiva’s various forms. The prastaram consists of valapi, Kapotam with Nasi
kudus & kodi karukku, and vyyalavari. The Nasikudus also has the
bas-reliefs. An eka tala dravida brick Vimanam is on the bhoomidesam.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
temple authorities claim that this temple was constructed during the Vikrama
Chozha period by his minister Ilangarar. But the Original temple may belong to the early Chozhas / Pallavas. The Lion Pillars may be the remains of that.
As
per the temple’s display, during 2020, the temple had about 183.65 acres of
Nanjai land and 174.92 acres of Punjai Land.

LEGENDS
The
purana of the temple goes like this…. This temple was built by a minister of a
king without the permission of the King. At the same time, the King also
constructed a temple. When the kumbhabhishekam date of both temples coincides on
the same date, Sri Shiva, in the king's dream, told him that he would be attending the minister’s temple.
Based
on this, the king visited the temple and asked the minister to give the punya / palan
(benefit) of constructing this temple. When the minister refused, the King tried
to kill him with his word. Shiva appeared, and the sword hit the legs of
Shiva (a crack is shown to me in the Aalingana moorthy) in Koshtam. Shiva
blessed the minister, but due to the brightness of Shiva, the King lost his eyesight. The King came to this temple and
surrendered to Shiva. Since the King surrendered to him, Shiva gave back his
eyesight. Hence, Shiva is Called as Sarnntharai Kaatha Swamy. Devas, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma worshiped Shiva
of this temple. Maha Vishnu worshiped in
the form of Yazhi. Devotees worship Shiva and Periyanayaki Amman for Marriage
and child boon.
Maha
Vishnu worshipped Shiva to get relieved from the dosha caused by to killing of
Hiranyakasibhu. Created a Theertham with Chakrayutham and worshipped Shiva. This
place, Thillaivanam, was called Thillaiyazhi during ancient times, and the same
was later corrupted to the present name of Thillaiyadi. A bas relief of
Maha Vishnu worshipping Shiva in the form of Yazhi can be seen on the Kodimaram.
