( As per Thevara Vaippau sthalam details, this place was called Kalanthai, ArumozhiDeva Valanattu Kalappal ). The temple may have been reconstructed as a stone temple during the 13th Century Pandya period and later received contributions, from the 15-16th Century Nayaka Kings and Venadu Kings.

As per the inscriptions ( Travancore Kings 1512 CE and Parakrama Pandiya’s 6th reign year 1548 CE ), this place was called Vanavan Naattu Pachchatru Pokku Kalakkad alias Chozhakula Vallipuram and Shiva was called as Puraverieechuvaram Udaiya Nayanar. And Ambal was called as Angaya(r)kaN Nachiyar

The king assigned the services of some kudi as the fifteenth member in the temple at Kaļakkādu. The document was written by Märttāndan.

The sculptures in the temple belonged to the 16th century CE and they included those of Boothala Veera Udaya Marthanda Varman, a king of Travancore or Venadu. According to Dr. Balusami, “Boothala Veeran was an important king of Venadu or Tiruvadi. He built a palace at Kalakkad, named it ‘pudhu veedu’ ( new House ), and lived there for a long time. The front mandapam in the temple, with pillars that emit music when tapped, was built by him.” He was also called Puli Marthanda Varman.

The Travancore king (name not given), Kollam 676, 1500 CE  inscription ( SII- Volume - XLI, No. 131, AR. No. 130 of 1905 ) on the north wall of Sathyavaheeswarar Temple records the Gift of land as dēvadāna to midday service in Puravarīchchuram temple in Kaļakkādu alias Chōlakulavallipuram in Vānava nādu. The king made the gift when he was in his camp at Vadachēri

LEGENDS
As per the legend, Rama and Lakshmana came to this temple and worshipped Shiva of this temple after Sita was abducted by Ravana. Shiva promised / Sathyam that Sita would get back soon. Later after Ravana was vanquished and killed, Rama Sita and Lakshmana came to this temple and worshipped Shiva as a part of thanksgiving. Hence Shiva is called Sathyavageeswarar ( one who keeps his promise ).

In another legend, in the 13th century, Veera Marthanda Varman, the king of Travancore, had a practice of worshipping Siva at Thiruppudaimarudur. Once, he was unable to visit it due to floods in the region, when he heard a divine voice, that a Shiva Lingam is under the Vanni Tree and the practice may be continued for this Shiva Lingam, considered as Thiruppudaimarudur Shiva. The King did as per the divine voice and later he built a Temple for Shiva. ( but the temple was built by the Pandyas )

It is believed that Suriyan worshipped Shiva at this temple. To signify this, during March and September 2o, 21, and 22nd the Sun rays fall on moolavar.
