Sri Kailasanathar Temple / Sivan Kovil / சிவன் கோவில் கைலாசநாதர் உடனுறை காமாட்சி அம்மன் ஆலயம், Arumbavur, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Kailasanathar Temple at Arumbavur, in Perambalur District was a part of “Perambalur & Ariyalur Districts Heritage Walk” organised by Aatrupadai - ஆற்றுப்படை A Tours and Heritage group on 4th and 5th, November 2023. We extend our sincere thanks to Dr Mahatma Selvapandian for guiding us to this temple, arranging for the darshan and meals.

Some of the salient features of this Temple are...
The temple is facing east with a 3 tier Rajagopuram on the South side. Entrance to the ardha mandapam is on the south side. Balipeedam and Rishabam are on the east side of the temple. Vinayagar is at the entrance of Sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar in the sanctum sanctorum is on a round avudayar. In Kostam, Narthana Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai. Ambal sannidhi and Navagrahas are in the maha mandapam.

Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing South with stucco dwarapalakis. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam. 

In praharam Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Arumugar, Ayyappan Shrine with Karuppasamy and Kaduthasamy guardians, Nagars, Shiva Lingam with Rishabam, Chandikeswarar and Ashta Bhairavas.
 
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a Pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam and pattika. The Bhitti starts with vedika. The Kostas are of sala style. The Vishnu Kantha Pilasters are with square base, Naga bandham, kalasam, kudam, Lotus petals mandi, palakai and Poo mottu pothyal. The prastaram consists of Valapi with lotus petals, Kapotam with nasi kudus and viyyalavari. Nasi kudus has the bhuta gana’s faces. Stucco Vesara Vimanam is on the Bhumi desam. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma are on the tala and greeva koshtams. Maha Vishnu / part of Ashta dikpalas are on the greevam. 







The bas relief of Ambal Kamakshi as cow worshipping Shiva Lingam, by milching milk on Shiva Linga, is seen on many places of the temple, which includes the nagabandham of Pilasters. Saints, Hanuman, etc, are also in place of nagabandham of pilasters.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
This temple was built during by Vanakovaraiyars, during the same period of Aragalur Sri Kamanatheeswarar Temple, under Chozha’s reign. Chozha period inscriptions are found on the wall and adhistanam. As per the inscription this place was called as Jananatha valanattu Vembar kootrathu Arumbar. Shiva was called as Arumbar Mahadevar, Arumbar Udayar Vada Kailasanathar,.

Kulothunga Chozha- III’s period inscription records the gift of lands to this Mahadevar temple and Alwar temple of this village, for the benefit of his master Chembai Nayagar, by Chozha Modan alias Magathainaattu Velaan. 

Another inscription records that Chembai Rajarajathevan alias Vanakovaraian, a regional king, established an endowment of Pooja and thirupani to this Arumbar Udayar Vada Kailayamudayar. For the same the nanjai and Punjai lands under the Periya eri and chiRReri, the lands belongs to Durgaipatti, Pidaripatti, Ayyanar, in Rajarajanallur and the taxes like Thoothavari, Srikariyaperu ayam collected from devadhana lands Nanjai and Punjai in Keeraipadi are given to this temple.

Araiyan Thondaiman Perumal Pillai alias Sethirayadevan inscription records the gift of lands for poojas and Thirupani. Also the taxes collected from the Vinnagara Perumal temple also given to this temple.

Telugu letters are found, on the stones as markings. It was told that these markings are made during reconstruction of the temple during 20th century and the sthapathis are brought from Andhra Pradesh.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam and Ashta Bhairavas are installed and consecrated on 21st January 2009.  Flooring was done by Solai Ramaswamy of Sri Balaji Real estate.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, Ma Parvati requests Shiva to marry her once again on the earth. Shiva asked to go to bhulok in the form of cow and will marry her at the right time. Ambal came to earth in the form of Cow and worshipped Shiva, by milching milk on Shiva Linga. Shiva Came to earth and married her.

In another legend, the Kamadhenu lost her mystical power and become an ordinary cow due to the curse of a Maharishi. She came to this earth, worshipped Shiva and got relieved from the Curse, also got back her original power.  



POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, maha Shivaratri, Masi Maham, etc.

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
This temple is about 7 KM off from the Salem – Attur – Perambalur main Road. 
The temple is about 28 KM from Perambalur, 60 KM from Ariyalur, 92 KM from Trichy, 102 KM from Thanjavur and 288 from Chennai.
Nearest railway station is Ariyalur.

Sri Kutram Porutthavar Temple / Kutram Porutha Nathar Temple, / ஶ்ரீ குற்றம் பொறுத்தவர் சிவன் கோயில், சு. ஆடுதுறை / S.Aduthurai, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Kutram Poruthavar Temple at S. Aduthurai, in Perambalur District was a part of “Perambalur & Ariyalur Districts Heritage Walk” organised by Aatrupadai - ஆற்றுப்படை A Tours and Heritage group on 4th and 5th, November 2023. This temple is on the south banks of river Vellaru.

Some of the salient features of this Temple are...
The temple is facing east. With a 7 tier Rajagopuram.  Dwajasthambam, balipeedam and rishabam are after the rajagopuram. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.

In praharam Navagrahas, 63var ( with their paintings above each Nayanmars ), Saptamatrikas, Valanchuzhi Vinayagar, Kasi Viswanathar with Visalakshi, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar and Stucco 18 hands veerabhadra.  

Ambal is in a separate temple like sannidhi. Dwarapalakis are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE
Bas-reliefs of Natya karana sculptures, Musicians, Shiva’s various forms, Shiva Lingas, Kalinga Narthana, Ayyanar, Varahar, Veena players, Cow worshipping Shiva, etc, are on the Rajagopuram entrance wall. Sanga nidhi and Padmanidhi reliefs are on the Rajagopuram column ( on the temple side ).

இமயம் முதல் குமரி வரை பல்வேறு இடங்களிலும் வணங்கப்பெறும் ஸித்தர். நாத பரம்பரை என்னும் தமிழக ஸித்தர் பரம்பரையை உருவாக்கியவர். குமரக்கடவுள் சைவ கௌல நூல்களைக் கடலில் எறிய பைரவரே நீந்திச் சென்று மீனிடமிருந்து நூல்களைப் பெற்று கரைக்கு வந்ததாகவும் மீனில் வயிற்றில் இவர் பிறந்ததாகவும் பல்வேறு புராணத்தகவல்கள் உண்டு. நேபாளத்திலுள்ள குறிப்புகளைக் கொண்டு ஐந்தாம் நூற்றாண்டு எனவும் மற்றைய குறிப்புகளைக் கொண்டு எட்டாம் நூற்றாண்டு எனவும் காலத்தை நிர்ணயித்திருக்கிறார்கள். நேபாளத்தில் இவரை அவலோகிதேச்வரரின் அவதாரமாகப் பௌத்தர்கள் கொண்டாடுகின்றனர். தமிழில் மச்சமுனி என்று வழங்கப்படுபவர், கௌலஜ்ஞானநிர்ணயம், ஹடயோகம் முதலிய நூல்களை இயற்றியவர். தமிழில் கோரக்கமுனி என்று கொண்டாடப்படும் கோரக்ஷர் இவருடைய சீடராவார். கோரக்ஷஸம்ஹிதா, ஸித்தஸித்தாந்த ஸங்க்ரஹம் முதலிய நூல்கள் ஸித்த ஸம்ப்ரதாயத்திற்கு மூலநூல்களாகும். இவற்றின் மொழிபெயர்ப்புக்களே தமிழில் சித்தர் பாடல்களாக அமைந்திருக்கின்றன. பிண்டத்தில் அண்டம், 36 தத்துவங்கள் முதலிய எல்லாம் இந்த நூல்களில் உண்டு. பிற்கால நூலான சாபர சிந்தாமணியில் பஞ்ச த்ராவிட மந்த்ரங்கள் என்ற பெயரில் மலையாளபகவதி மந்த்ரம், தமிழில் உள்ள சில மந்த்ரங்களும் கொடுக்கப்பெற்றிருக்கின்றன. திருமூலநாதரும் இந்த பரம்பரையைச் சேர்ந்தவரே. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are in tala and greeva Kostas.



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple belongs to Chozha period. The Rajagopuram and mandapas are constructed during Vijayanagara period ( Mallikarjuna rayar..?).

Kulothunga Chozha-I’s period inscription records this place name as Punsei Thirukkurangaduthurai and Shiva was called as Thirukurangaduthurai Udaiya mahadevar. This place was a brahmadeya Village under Mudikonda valanattu Ukalur kootram. This inscription records that a saint Sambandan Mandakavan alias Kulothunga Chozha Vayiraki gave a gift of land to this temple.  The periphery limit of this land is mentioned as Athiyur.

One of the inscription mentions Vikrama Chozha’s name as Thiruchitramabalamudaiyar, who paved golden plates to Chidambaram temple. This inscription further records the endowment of naivedyam and oil kappu on Saturdays by Ambar Nattu Ambar Village Vichathiri alias Ambar nattu Velaan. The same was given to Siva Brahmins to carryout the Poojas.

Rajaraja Chozha –II’s period inscription records that, some people of Adhisoothamangalam alias Chembian Kalathur had sold lands as Thirunamaththu kani  for 75000 kasus to this Kutramporutha nayanar temple. Adhisoothamangalam is now called as Arasamangalam. The periphery villages are mentioned as Kizhumathur, Nannai, Suddhamalli, Thaththanur, PerunerkunRam, Kazhanivai, Ugalur.

Pandya period inscription records the endowment of doing a pooja to Thirukamakottamudaiya Nachiyar Elavarkuzhaliyar. This was done as per the order of the king, by the Ulagam kaththa Vanakovaraiyar.

Vijayanagara King Devarayar-II’s period inscription records that an agreement reached between Valangai and Idangai people, belongs to Irungolapadi Pandivalanattu, 18 Villages around Ponparappi assembled at Ugalur Kootrathu Kurangadiya Thurai Udaiyar KuRRamporutharuliya Nayanar temple Mandapam to oppose Usaavadi Pirathani, Vanniyar, Jivithakarar, Kaniyalar Brahmins and vellalar. Since these people’s activities are against the Valangai and Idangai peoples like, imposing of Taxes, Collection of Taxes, giving troubles, they tried to destroy the privileges given already in the form of Pattayam / cheppedu, try to destroy the 24 feet measurement scale called Gobipathan kal. Also it was unanimously decided not to work for that people, should not write accounts. If any body not obeyed these decisions, they will be punished.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, due the mistake ( had an affair with Thilothama ) done by Swetaketu munivar, his father Uthalakar ordered to establish a Shiva Linga on the banks of river Neeva ( now called as Vellaru ) to get relieved from the sin. The Swithaketu Munivar established a Shiva Linga, worshipped shiva Kutramporutha Nathar and got relieved from the Sin. Hence this place was called as Swetaketu Aduthurai, in short Su Aduthurai. Since Shiva pardoned Swetaketu’s mistakes, Shiva was called as Aparatha Ratchagar ( குற்றம் பொறுத்த நாதர் ).

In Another legend, the Monkey King Sugriva worshipped Shiva of this temple. Hence this place was called as Sugriva Aduthurai, in short Su Aduthurai.

It is believed that Suriyan worships Shiva of this temple through his rays on 11, 12, and 13 of Panguni.

Apart from regular poojas as per Kamika agama, special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Panguni Uthiram, Vinayagar Chaturthi, Masi maham etc,.

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 11.30 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.30 Hrs. Morning Pooja 08.30 hrs, Uchikala 11.30 hrs, Sayaratchai 18.30 hrs and ardha jama 20.30 hrs.

This temple is about a KM off from the place Tittakudi – Tholudur main road.
The temple is about 7 KM fro Tittakudi, 7 KM from Tholudur, 37 KM from Ariyalur, 90 KM from Trichy, 78 KM from Thanjavur and 250 from Chennai.
Nearest railway station is Ariyalur.
