HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple belongs to Chozha period. The Rajagopuram and mandapas are constructed during Vijayanagara period ( Mallikarjuna rayar..?).

Kulothunga Chozha-I’s period inscription records this place name as Punsei Thirukkurangaduthurai and Shiva was called as Thirukurangaduthurai Udaiya mahadevar. This place was a brahmadeya Village under Mudikonda valanattu Ukalur kootram. This inscription records that a saint Sambandan Mandakavan alias Kulothunga Chozha Vayiraki gave a gift of land to this temple.  The periphery limit of this land is mentioned as Athiyur.

One of the inscription mentions Vikrama Chozha’s name as Thiruchitramabalamudaiyar, who paved golden plates to Chidambaram temple. This inscription further records the endowment of naivedyam and oil kappu on Saturdays by Ambar Nattu Ambar Village Vichathiri alias Ambar nattu Velaan. The same was given to Siva Brahmins to carryout the Poojas.

Rajaraja Chozha –II’s period inscription records that, some people of Adhisoothamangalam alias Chembian Kalathur had sold lands as Thirunamaththu kani  for 75000 kasus to this Kutramporutha nayanar temple. Adhisoothamangalam is now called as Arasamangalam. The periphery villages are mentioned as Kizhumathur, Nannai, Suddhamalli, Thaththanur, PerunerkunRam, Kazhanivai, Ugalur.

Pandya period inscription records the endowment of doing a pooja to Thirukamakottamudaiya Nachiyar Elavarkuzhaliyar. This was done as per the order of the king, by the Ulagam kaththa Vanakovaraiyar.

Vijayanagara King Devarayar-II’s period inscription records that an agreement reached between Valangai and Idangai people, belongs to Irungolapadi Pandivalanattu, 18 Villages around Ponparappi assembled at Ugalur Kootrathu Kurangadiya Thurai Udaiyar KuRRamporutharuliya Nayanar temple Mandapam to oppose Usaavadi Pirathani, Vanniyar, Jivithakarar, Kaniyalar Brahmins and vellalar. Since these people’s activities are against the Valangai and Idangai peoples like, imposing of Taxes, Collection of Taxes, giving troubles, they tried to destroy the privileges given already in the form of Pattayam / cheppedu, try to destroy the 24 feet measurement scale called Gobipathan kal. Also it was unanimously decided not to work for that people, should not write accounts. If any body not obeyed these decisions, they will be punished.
