Thanthondreeswarar Temple also known as Upamanyeswarar, Kanchipuram, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

21st Feb 2020
This is one of the less popular Shiva Temples of Kanchipuram, on the Ekambaranathar Sannathi Street, of Periya Kanchipuram. Thanks to Babu Mano and Vicky Kannan for providing me with some details and photos for this article. This is a small temple spread over 375 sq feet.

The 18th-century Sri Sivagnana Swamigal has sung the sthala purana of this temple in Kanchi Puranam. In the Sthala Purana, Sri Sivagnana Swamigal mentions the location of the temple as south of  Surakara Theertham.

Moolavar : Sri Thanthondreeswarar / Sri Upamanneeswara
Consort   : Sri Vandarkuzhali

Some of the salient features of this temple are...
The temple is facing east with an entrance arch. A stucco Nataraja with 6 hands and two Rishabas on both sides is on the top of the entrance arch. Rishabaroodar stucco image is on the top of the mukha mandapa. Moolavar is of swayambhu, and Pallava’s icon Somaskandar is on the back side wall of the sanctum sanctorum.

In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma, and Durgai. In the praharam, Balipeedam, Rishabam are under a small mandapam, Vinayagar and Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar.

ARCHITECTURE
There are 7 Pallava-period sandstone sculptures on the outer walls of the Mukha mandapa. These sculptures belong to the Pallava period, and the ie man and woman are the Kapalikas, a sect of Saivism in a drunken state, Characters of “Matha Vilasa  Prahasana”, a humorous Drama play, written by the Pallava King Mahendravarman-I (600 to 630 CE), also called Mathavilasan. The play also gives importance to the mattu kombu/ Horn and the human skull as a begging bowl. The play criticizes the practices followed by the Kapalika and Pasupata sects of Shaivism and Buddhism.

HISTORY
Based on the sculptures, the temple was built during the 7th-century Pallava king Mahendravarman's period. Hope the original temple was intact till the 18th century. Sri Sivagnana Swamigal’s period was reconstructed, not following any architecture or agama. The sad part of it is that the walls are affixed with red granite slabs, leaving space for the sculptures, spoiling the original temple in the name of renovation.

These sculptures were identified by Mr Nagasamy in 1970 and recorded in his book titled Damilica part-1. In that, he said these are the forms of Koothu or a street play called அகக்கூத்து & புறக்கூத்து. Mr Nadana Kasinathan, the then Director of the Archaeology Department, also accepted the same view and records in his book titled Art Panorama of Tamils. Later, he changed his view and wrote in one of his articles about Kapalika sculptures.  The Kapalikas hold the horn and human skull as begging bowls. Both ladies and gentlemen wear Yagnopaveetha /பூநூல் made of cloth, and ladies wear big-size anklets.

In this sculpture, there are three men on the left side, and a woman is shown on the right side. The first man holds his hand on his sword, whereas the second man holds his hand (hope obstructing).  The lady shows her hand to stop.

In this sculpture, the woman wears a bra (marbu kachchu), a Kundala in her ears, and an anklet. Her right hand is shown in a raised position holding Kapala (?), and her left hand pulls the hair of the man.

In this sculpture, the man’s left leg is entwined with the woman’s right leg. The man holds a toddy pot in one hand and a Mattukombu/buffalo horn in the other hand. The woman wears an anklet.

In this sculpture, both are ladies. One woman wears a bra, and another does not. One woman raises her hand with a kapala, whereas the other woman holds a Mattukombu/buffalo horn.

In this sculpture, the woman is not wearing a bra, holding a Mattukombu/horn, and wearing an anklet. The man holds a toddy pot.

In this sculpture, the woman is not wearing a bra and jumps to hold the man, and he is turning back and walking. The man holds something in his left hand and wears Yaknopaveetha and a big Kundala in his ears.

In this sculpture, both men wear a Yaknopaveetha/sacred thread made of cloth.

LEGEND:
Lord Shiva appeared as Shiva Linga on his own to give mukti to all living beings. Hence called Thanthondreeswarar.

As per the legend, Upamanniayar was born to Viagra Padar and Vashistar’s sister (who got a boon from Lord Shiva with a tiger’s leg to climb trees to plug flowers to worship). When he was at Vashistha Ashram, he had the opportunity of drinking Kamadhenu’s milk. When he returned to his father and mother, he was disappointed for not drinking Kamadhenu’s milk. On seeing Upamanniyar's disappointment, his mother advised him to go to Kanchipuram and worship Lord Shiva. After he came to Kanchi, he started his penance on Lord Shiva. Satisfied with the penance, Thanthondreeswarar, Lord Shiva gave darshan in the form of Indra. Since Upamanniya Munivar couldn’t accept this, he tried to kill himself. Then Lord Shiva appeared as Rishabaroodar and gave a boon of the real knowledge of God, to live young without getting old and immortal life, i.e., being exempt from death.

Pujyasri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamiji, - MAHA PERIYAVA MANI MANDAPAM, ORIKKAI, KANCHIPURAM

21st February 2020.
The visit to Maha Periyava’s Mani mandapam, at Orikkai, was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. This Village Orikkai is on the Kanchipuram to Uthiramerur main Road, on the northern banks of the River Palar.

It is believed that this place was named after the Vishnu Temple, and Vishnu is called “Or Iravu Tangi Irunda Perumal - ஓர் இரவு தங்கி இருந்த பெருமாள்” (Perumal who stayed here for one night), which has been corrupted to Orikkai. The transformation might have taken like this ஓர் இரவு இருக்கைஓரிருக்கைஒரிக்கை Or iravu Irukkai – Orirukkai – Orikkai. This is one of the villages where Maha Periyava used to visit, especially during Chaturmasya Vratha, first worship Sri Agastheeswarar, and then go to camp.

Pujyasri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamiji, 68th Shankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, built at Orikkai, was consecrated on 28th January 2011.

ARCHITECTURE
The complex consists of Rajagopuram, Deepasthambam, Rishaba Mandapa, Sanctum, Mukha Mandapam, and 100 feet 100-foot-high Vimana. The Vimana is of the Suddha variety, where only stone is used.  The height of 100 feet symbolizes the life span of Maha Periyava. The Vimana is of Ananda Vimana, and the Sikara is 56 feet, maintaining the ratio of 1:1.3/4. The Front mandapa is built with one hundred Pillars. All the stones used are white granite stones sourced from Pattimalai Kuppam, about 50 miles from Kanchipuram.

The Vimana is of 5 tiers, and the stupa is also made of stone. The Vimana is on a raised pedestal. The Vimana is beautified with Kutas and intermediate salas. Windows or the jalas are provided on three sides for proper Lighting and ventilation. The Sanctum is not regular but like a mandapa with a platform with a 4-pillar mandapa at the center. Two concentric Passages are provided around the platform where Mahaperiyava’s statue was installed. The Paduka of Maha Periyava was made out of sandalwood and kept in front of the portrait. Hence called Paduka mani mandapa.

Another Significant feature of this mani mandapam is two sculptures portraying two well-known dhyana slokas in Sanskrit. The Sculpture on the south wall of the main temple portrays the Guru Parambara, ie, the first Guru, followed by the disciples. – Vishnu, Brahma, Vasishta, Sakti, Parasara, Vyasa, and Sukha, followed by Gaudapada, Govinda Yoginda, and Adi Shankaracharya and his disciples. This is an illustrative sculpture that would enable the visitors to correlate the dhyana sloka recited by all with the sculpture.

Guru Parampara, ie, the first Guru followed by the disciples. – Vishnu, Brahma, Vasishta, Sakti, Parasara, Vyasa, and Sukha, followed by Gaudapada, Govinda Yoginda, and Adi Shankaracharya and his disciples.
