Tamil Jains / Samanars & Madras / தமிழ் சமணர்களும் சென்னையும் – A Madras Day Heritage Visit to Puzhal, Vilangadupakkam, Vichur, Solipalayam ( Chozhavaram ) and Chinnampedu / Siruvapuri

26th August 2018.
This visit to the Jain Jinalaya was a part of Madras Day celebrations, to learn more about Tamil Jains and their contribution to Madras, on 26th August 2018. This visit was organized by Mr. Kombai Anwar, a Historian & a documentary filmmaker, and led by Prof. Dr. Kanaka Ajithadass, from the Tamil Jain community. The original plan of starting in two vans from Nageswara Rao Park was changed to one van, and the second van joined us at Thirumangalam. Visiting of 6 Jinalayas planned from Puzhal to Thiruvallur was cut short to 5 Temples for want of time since the visit was supposed to wind up by 12.00 hrs. The initial hiccup at the time of starting had an impact on the end time also.

After Puzhal, we traveled on the single village roads with many potholes to reach our targeted places. Enjoyed the scenic beauty of the villages and green fields after the rain. At Puzhal Jinalaya, Dr. Kanaka Ajithadass explained what Jainism is, Jain’s contribution to the Tamil language  & literature, Education, their culture, Ahimsa,  the food habits, the rituals followed, etc. He also explained the Iconography of the Jain Tirthankara statues. It was said that some of the Digambara Jinalayas had been taken over by the North Indian Swethambara Jain sect. The lack of financial support by the Tamil Jains and the dwindling population (25 to 28 thousand Tamil Jains) are the main reasons.

Sri Parshwanath Jinalaya Manasthambam relief

PUZHAL
The Digambara old Jinalaya dedicated to Sri Adinath was taken over by the North Indian Swethambara Jains. Sri Adinath was decorated and painted in the North Indian style. The Jinalaya retains the old mandapa with pillars, probably built during the latter Chozha period. On the North side, there is a sripada, believed to be one of a Jain monk’s footprints. A new big Jain Jinalaya was also constructed with marble in the same premises.

Since the original Jinalaya was taken over by the Swethambara sect, the Digambara sect constructed a new Dravidian architecture Jinalaya for Sri Parshvanath. A Manasthambam and Balipedam are in front. Four Parshvanath Tirthankaras facing on all 4 sides are installed. Daily abhishek and poojas are performed. Iyakan and Iyaki (male & female attendants) images are also worshiped in this Jinalaya.  The Samana poet Pulavar Jambukumaran, who was awarded twice for his literary works by the Tamil Nadu Government, hails from this place. His classical Tamil literary works include Parshvanath Kaviyam and Mahavir Kaviyan, and he also has credit for 70 Jain Tamil works. It was said that Tamil Jains are living in considerable numbers in Vellalar Street of Puzhal.

Old Adinath Jinalaya

Sripada
Old Adinath Jinalaya's old pillars and capital
Sri Parshwanath -Digambar Jinalaya
Dravidian architecture Vimana of Digambara Jinalaya

VILANGADUPAKKAM.
Mr. Poornachandran from Puzhal also accompanied us to guide the rest of the Jinalaya. Instead of touching the main road, we traveled through the village roads. Vilangadupakkam is about 7 km from Puzhal.

The Jinalaya consists of a sanctum and an artha mandapam. Dwajasthambam and balipeedam are immediately after the gate. A Dravidian architecture vimana was built above the sanctum. The stucco images of Adinath, Neminath, and Parshvanath are on the vimana. The Jinalaya is very old and has been subjected to many renovations. The pillars bear an ancient look. Moolavar Sri Mahavir is in the artha Pariankasana sitting posture on a lion throne. The lanchanam/ identification symbol lion is shown on the base. A halo with jwalas, three umbrellas (முக்குடை), creepers of the Ashoka tree, Whisk/ Chowry bearers (சாமரதாரிகள்) are also shown.

In addition to this, there are 5 Tirthankars, kept in the right side mandapa, which are abandoned in nearby Villages and brought here. The Tirthankaras include Mahavir from Pervallur, Sri Rishaba from Methavayil, and Parshvanath from Vallur. Also, images of a Tirthankara without three umbrellas and a Parshwanath are in the same Mandapa. Even though no Tamil Jains are living in this Village, the poojas are conducted regularly through the Tamil Jain Trustees.

VICHOOR
The Vichoor village is about 4 km from Vilangadupakkam. The newly built Jinalaya is adjacent to a Vishnu Temple. The Jinalaya was built with a sanctum and a mandapam. This big-sized Sri Adinath was found abandoned in a nearby tank. A Halo ring, three umbrellas, an Ashoka tree along two Chowry (whisk) bearers are shown. A pillow on the back side of the image indicates that this Tirthankara may belong to the latter period, ie, the 14th to 15th century. Like Vilangadupakkam, in this Village also no Jain family is living, and daily poojas are conducted by a Jain coming from a long distance.

SOLIPALAYAM.
This Solipalayam Village is about 12 km from Vichoor and a part of Chozhavaram, on the Chennai to Tirupati route.  It was learned that this village was once a Jaina Village. The Jinalaya is dedicated to the 22nd Tirthankara Neminath. Neminath was found in a pond in the Village and installed in a small shrine constructed in the premises of a house. Neminath is shown with a Triple umbrella / Mukkudai, branches of the Ashoka tree, and Chowry /whisk bearers.  Since no Pillow-like projection is shown, this Neminath may belong to the 12th to 13th century.

CHINNAMBEDU
This place, Chinnambedu/ a part of Siruvapuri,  is about 15 km from Chozhavaram/ Solipalayam. This small Jinalaya is dedicated to the 23rd Tirthankara Sri Parshwanath. Sri Parshwanath is in the standing Kayotsarga posture without three umbrellas (Mukkudai). A 5-hooded snake is shown over Sri Parshwanath's head. Samaratharis (chowry/whisk bearers), above chowry bearers, a Lotus on the right, and a shankha on the left are also shown. The Lotus and the conch indicate the Padma Nidhi and Sanga Nidhi, the treasure bearers. This Tirthankara may belong to the 12th to 13th century. Yaksha and Yakshi images are on a platform.

It was said that Jain bas-reliefs are also available on the pillars of the Sri Varadharaja Perumal temple. The Perumal temple is about 50 meters from the Jinalaya. Parshvanath and Tirthankara bas-reliefs are carved on the pillar of Thayar Sannidhi Mandapam. As per the experts, these pillars might have been taken from a dilapidated Jain temple, or while constructing both temples, the pillars might have been interchanged.

Velachery, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

19th August 2018
This Perumal with Sridevi and Bhoodevi is sitting under an asbestos sheet shed. This small shrine with Biruku Muni, Ramanujar, and Thumbikkai Alwar is on Telugu Brahmin Street. During the Chozha time, this place, Velachery, was one of the Chaturvedi Mangalam in Puliyur kottam of Jayangonda Chozha Mandalam. The legend of the Shiva temple, about 500 meters away from this place at Dhandeeswaram, is related to the story of chatur Vedas, i.e., 4 Vedas. Regarding Telugu Brahmins, before the bifurcation of the State of Tamil Nadu, based on the language, in Chennai,  most of the people’s language was Telugu, and Telugu Brahmins  might have lived in a separate street adjacent to Brahmin Street.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
When I enquired about these more than 800 to 1000-year-old idols and the Shrine, the battar pointed out a small dilapidated temple built with stone up to the ceiling and brick vimana under the clutch of a peepal tree. It was said that these moorthams were unearthed in front of that dilapidated temple.  This temple is about 50 feet away from the existing  Shrine.  The sanctum sanctorum is visible only from half of the koshtams and adhistanam, and the part of the wall is under the earth due to the rise of the ground level. Perumal’s various forms are chiseled in the koshta makara thorana. Unwanted materials were dumped on the back side of the temple, leaving room for the snakes, and the front side was also encroached.

The sanctum wall has 10th to 11th-century Chozha period inscriptions. The inscriptions are not legible. The temple construction might have started along with the Yoga Narasimha Perumal temple of Dhandeeswaram. When I inquired of the neighbors, they were not aware of the history, and there is also a belief that whoever tries to renovate this temple will die after some time, hence nobody comes forward.

Velachery, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

19th August 2018.
When I inquired about any old temple in the vicinity, the Hari Sri Vasudeva Perumal’s temple Bhattar directed me to this Soundararaja Perumal temple. The Moorthams are old, but the temple was constructed in recent years. This temple is facing east at the intersection of two streets, and a Pillayar temple is adjacent to this temple.

This is a small shrine with a sanctum and a mandapa. Garudalwar is in front. Moolavar Sridevi and Bhudevi are big in size, about 5 feet tall, and in a sitting posture. Moolavar Sri Soundararaja Perumal’s upper hands are holding conch and chakra, but the lower right hand is in abhaya mudra and the left hand in ahvana hastam (pointing finger is a little raised means Perumal is calling his devotees). Hence, this Perumal is worshiped as Kodukkum Deivam. Urchavars Soundararaja Perumal with Soundaravalli Thayar and Andal are in a standing posture.  The Utsava murti's lower hands are in the same posture as Moolavar.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The Bhattar Sriram said that these Murtis are more than 800 years old, unearthed on the back side of this temple under a neem tree.  Also, it was said that the person who shifted and constructed this temple is well off now.

TEMPLE TIMINGS:
The temple will be kept open from  06.30 hrs to 11.00 hrs and from 17.30 to 20.25 hrs.

Sri Thiyagesar Temple of Thiruvotriyur / ஸ்ரீ தியாகராஜர் கோயில் / வடிவுடை அம்மன் கோயில் / – A HERITAGE PERSPECTIVE VISIT WITH RATHAM.

18th August 2018.
Why is this place called Thiruvotriyur?
This place, Thiruvotriyur, has existed since the Paleolithic period with human habitation. As per the literature, this place was called Adhipuri, hence this temple’s Lord is called Adhipuriswarar. Another version is that the creator of this universe, Brahma, created this place first, hence this is called Aadhipuri. This place is also called Thiruvotriyur. Thiruvotriyur has different meanings. In Tamil, “oththi” means mortgage. Another meaning is “wiping out”. During piralaya, this place was completely covered with water, and Shiva wiped out the water. This place is called Thiruvotriyur. From the copper plate of Velanchery near Thiruthani, Vijayalaya Chozha’s father's name was mentioned as "Votriyuran". The same name appears in the Tiruchengode inscription also. As per the Thevaram hymns, the sea was very near, and able to hear the roaring sound of the sea waves.

The Rajagopuram and front mandapam…The east side of Rajagopuram is of 5 tiers, with stucco images related to Shaivism. Kumba pancharam between the pilasters of the walls. This might have been built between the 10th and 13th centuries, probably during the Rajendra Chola period. The stucco images belong to the 16th-century Nayaka period.

 Main door
Miniature reliefs of the Rajagopuram base

The front mandapam of the main shrine was built during the Chozha period. It is to be noted that the main sanctum and Rajagopuram are not in the same straight line. Thiyagesar Sannadhi was built during the 16th to 17th centuries. The fusion of the Chozha period mandapa with the latter period Thiyagesar Sannadhi can be seen from the outside. The outer praharam has the 27 Shiva linga (old Lingas) representing the 27 nakshatras, on the south side of the outer praharam.

The main sanctum front mandapa is called a "Nithya Yaga Sala", where yaga used to be conducted daily. This mandapa might have been built during the 12th Century, a later Chozha period. The ceiling has statues of Shiva’s Various forms. An amazing one is a small Bikshadanar.  Dwarapalakas at the entrance of the main sanctum are worth seeing. The lalada of the crown has the Simha image. Both crown images are different. Also, both are not installed on a pedestal. Since the inscriptions are on the back wall of the Dwarapalakas, they were brought from elsewhere and installed here. The inscription on the right side wall (right side Dwarapalaka) speaks about a land distributed to 10 people who staged the life story of the Sundarar in the presence of Sathuranthantha Pandithar, Vasika Pandithar, Soma Siddhanatha Pandithar, and Otriyur Battar. It is mentioned that the land value should be the same as the land that was sold at Dhandeeswaram, part of Chennai City.  In the Nithya yaga mandapam near Natarajar Sannadhi, there is a Chandikeswarar, which belongs to the 8th to 9th Century.

 Dwarapalakas
  Chandikeswarar
Bhikshatana / Pichadanar

In the inner praharam near Kaliya Nayanar Sannadhi, there is an old Chozha painting faintly visible, which was discovered during renovation. Kaliya Nayanar, one of the 63 Nayanmar, belongs to this Thiruvotriyur. He spends all his money on lighting lamps for this temple. When he does not have money, he intends to light the lamp with his blood. When he tried to cut his head, Lord Shiva appeared and blessed him. The inner praharam may belong to the 9th to 10th century. The pillars have the Chozha period inscriptions. The original temple may be a brick temple with a square base sanctum.  During the Chozha period, this was reconstructed as the Gajabirushta sanctum with stone. The sanctum has inscriptions of the Rajendra period in Sanskrit, and many inscriptions speak about the donation made to this temple for burning lamps. Some of the donations are in terms of “sava moova peeradu", which means that at any point in time, the number of goats offered should not decrease. The name of the architect/sculptor of this temple is mentioned as Veera Chozha Ravi Thachan. One of the inscriptions speaks about an officer who had not collected the tax from the property belonging to this temple, which was called “Shiva Thuroki,” and his property was confiscated and attached to this temple.  In one inscription, 15% interest in terms of gold as tax to be collected once in six months, and food for the collector should be served.

 The story of Kaliya Nayanar
Chozha period inscriptions on the pillar

Vattaparai Amman temple. This is actually a Saptamatrikas temple facing North. The priests are not the usual Sivachariyar. For this sannidhi and Ambal Sannadhi, Kerala Namboothiris, who are also unmarried, are doing pooja. It was learned that this Vattaparai Amman was treated as a Village deity, and animals were sacrificed. A balipeedam and Soolam were there in front of this temple, which was removed in recent years. The practice of sacrifice was also stopped a few years before. Since this sannidhi is very close to the main sanctum, the sannidhi might have been constructed at a later period.

Moolavar Sannadhi.. Moolavar is in the form of an anthill, and abhishekam is done only to the avudayar. Moolavar is usually kept covered and will be opened only three days a year, from the Karthigai Deepam festival. Punuku and oil are applied. Iraivan is also called Padampakkanathar. As per the legend, the Snake Vasuki worshiped Lord Shiva and joined with Shiva with its body. This legend is very much associated with Kayarokana – Lakulisa Pasupata- cult worship, i.e., attaining Mukti and joining with Lord Shiva with the physical body. Incidentally, all Kayarokana Shiva temples are on the sea coast, in Nagapattinam, and a temple in Gujarat.

Thiyagarajar sannadhi.  Thiyagesar is in the form of a Somaskandar. The flower decorations are done in such a way that Swamy and Ambal’s faces, with their hands, are only seen. The Nadanam of Thiyagesar is Ajaba. It was said that this Thiyagesar worshiping cult may belong to the Kalamukha sect, which wears spatika kundala and yagnopaveetha made out of hair. They ate food in Kapalam (the skull of the human head).  Appar has sung that Bhikshatana came here after wandering Mylapore. Thiyarajar is a Boga Moorthy. During the procession, SomasKandar used to come out full of decorations and pooja articles. 12 people used to carry the open palanquin. On the outside of the inner praharam wall and near the Thiagarajar sannidhi, on the north side, inscriptions were there. Which speaks about the donations like 28 Samaram and Thivetti made by the devadasis. One of the donors’ names was mentioned as “Sani Otriyur Akki”. Iraivan was also called as manikka Thiyagar. The sad part is that the inscriptions were covered by the flooring done in recent years. It was also said that, in the olden days, Somaskandar was brought out by the Devadasis. The main sanctum was built during the Chozha period. Later, the mandapam was added and renovated during the Vijayanagar Nayaks.

Kowleeswar Sannadhi…. Kowleeswar Sannadhi is on the back side of the Thiyagesar Sannadhi. A form of Shiva holding a kapala and Shula on the upper and lower hands is in chin mudra and meditating posture. This moorthy may be called "Agora Dakshinamurthy". People by mistake claim him as Kowleeswarar and somebody, Lakuleesar.

Bhairavar sannidhi…. A beautiful life-size Bhairavar with jadamudi hangs up to the floor. A half-buried Bairavi is also inside Shiva’s main sanctum, just opposite Bhairava. The presence of Bhairava and Bhairavi indicates that the Kapalika cult worship existed earlier.

Vadivudai Amman Temple… The Amman faces south with a separate balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Simha vahana. The whole  Temple is also called Vadivudai Amman Temple. For this sannidhi and Vattaparai Amman Sannadhi, Kerala Namboothiris, who are also unmarried, are doing pooja. It was said that Sankarachariyar brought Namboothiris from Kerala to do pooja to Ambal. A chakra was also installed by him. Thyagaraja Swamikal has sung hymns on this Ambal. Vallalar also sang Navamani Malai. Pattinathar, Vallalar, Sankaracharya, and Kanchi Periyava worshiped Lord Shiva and Ambal of this temple.
