Sri Angalamman Temple / ஸ்ரீ அங்காளம்மன் கோயில், பெரியபுலியூர், Periyapuliyur near Bhavani, Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

After visiting the three-tier Hero Stone / Sati Nadukal, Sri Kali Temple and Half buried Ayyanar Statue three tier Hero Stone / Sati Nadukal, Sri Kali Temple and half-buried Ayyanar Statue, Mr Nandeeswaran took me to Sri Angalamman Temple, which is north of Periyapuliyur village. Before starting this visit, my Anni (Brother’s wife) told me that this Angalamman was their Kula Deivam. The temple is being managed by two families, 15 days a month on a rotational basis, and they reside near the temple. The temple was kept neat and clean.

The temple faces east with balipeedam, Rishabam, and Garudathoon. Based on the Garudathoon / Deepasthambam, reliefs of Nandhi and a Cow are milking milk on the Shiva Lingam.

There is a Rishabam (looks cute) and a balipeedam in the outer mandapam also. In the sanctum, there are two images, of which one is called Angalamman and the other is called Pongalamman. 

In the outer (praharam) sannidhi of Pechi & Sadachi (Locals call these statues and really who they are, do not know ?) and Veerabhadra. Also, Murtis of Chandikeswarar, Arumugar, and Jyeshta Devi / Thavvai Thayar (Under a Thoratti tree). (It was said that Arumugar and Thavvai Thai Jyeshta Devi, with manthan and Agni Madha, are kept outside since they are damaged. In addition to this, there are two images of a male and a female in a worshiping posture, one at the entrance of Veerabhadra sannidhi and the other at the base of Garuda thoon.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of a sanctum sanctorum, an ardha mandapam, and an asbestos sheet front mandapam. The truss of the mandapam was made of palm tree beams. It was said that the sanctum was built with nonstandard Chozha period bricks, including koshtam pilasters, and later they were plastered with cement.

Looking at the temple and the images available, this temple might have been a Shiva Temple once, and later, during reconstruction, the Images might have been installed at different locations. Only half of Chandikeswarar moortham is visible above the ground.

  

மூன்று நிலை வீரன் / சதி நடு கல், காளி கோவில், அய்யனார் சிலைகளைக் கண்ட பின்பு திரு நந்தீஸ்வரன் பெரியபுலியூரின் வடக்குப் பகுதியில் உள்ள ஸ்ரீ அங்காளம்மன் கோவிலுக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றார். நுழைந்த உடன் பலி பீடம் கருடத்தூண், நந்தி முதலியன இருந்தது. இடது புறம் பேச்சி & சடச்சி சன்னதியும் வலப்புரம் வீரபத்திரர் சன்னதியும் இருந்தது. கருவரையில் அங்காளம்மனும், பொங்காளம்மனும் உள்ளனர். கருவரை சோழர் கால செங்கற்களால் கட்டப்பட்டு பூசப்பட்டு இருந்தது. கோவில் வளாகத்தில் பாதி புதைந்த நிலையில் சண்டிகேஸ்வரரும், தவ்வை தாயார் எனப்படும் ஜேஷ்டா தேவியும், ஆறுமுகர் சிலைகளும் இருந்தது. மேலும் இரண்டு ஆண் பெண் சிலைகள் வணங்கிய நிலையில் பிரகாரத்தில் இருந்தது. கருடத்தூண் அடி பகுதியில் நந்தி ஒருபுறமும், பசு சிவலிங்கத்தின் மீது பால் சொரிவது போன்ற சிற்பமும் உள்ளது.

கருடத்தூணில் உள்ள நந்தி மற்றும் பசு சிவ லிங்கத்தின் மீது பால் சொரிவது போன்ற சிற்பம், சண்டிகேஸ்வரர், வீரபத்திரர், நந்திகள் இவைகளைக் காணும் போது இக்கோவில் ஒருகாலத்தில் சிவன் கோவிலாக இருந்திருக்கலாமோ என்று எண்ணத் தோன்றுகின்றது.
