The pilasters are Brahma kantha pilasters with kudam, Lotus petal mandi, palakai, and poo mottu pothyal. The temple was reconstructed, and the old stones were not placed in their positions.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple has the inscriptions of Pallava King Koperunsingan. Rajara-I also contributed to this temple. Later contributions are by the Pallava and Vijayanagara Nayaks.

LEGENDS
King Vasantharaja ruled this place, keeping Virudhachalam as the capital. He wanted to build a Temple for Narasimhar and couldn’t do so due to the troubles given by Parakalasura, a relative of Hiranyakasipu. The King undertook a penance as directed by his Guru. To answer his prayers, Lord Narasimha appeared and killed Parakalasura. The King prayed to Lakshmi to calm down Narasimhar. She sat on the lap of Narasimhar and made him calm. Lord Narasimha, with Lakshmi, gave darshan to King Vasantharaja, Devas, and Rishis. The place was named after the asura, who gave the opportunity of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha’s Darshan as “Parikala,” later corrupted to the present name of Parikal. It was told that the moolavar is swayambhu, installed by Vyasaraja along with Anjaneya idol in the sanctum.
