This is the 33rd Thevaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 1st
sthalam of Nadu Naadu on the banks of
river Vellar also known as Neeva ( Sundarar in his Thevaram mentions as Neeva ).
This place Thiruvelvayil Arathurai
mentioned is now called as
Thiruvattathurai. This is one of the 6 places ends with Thurai on the banks of
Rivers which are associated with Sapta Rishis.
Thirugnanasambandar, Appar, Sundarar
and Vallalar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. Sekkizhar
in his Periyapuranam, mentions that Lord Shiva has given the Pearl Palanquin
and umbrella.

this temple are....
The temple is facing east with a 5
tier Rajagopuram. Balipedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are immediately after
the Rajagopuram. There is an additional entrance arch for the sanctum
sanctorum. Stucco images of Lord Shiva with Parvati as Rishabaroodar. Moolavar
is of Swayambu. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar ( Brahma
and Maha Vishnu are on both sides ), Brahma and Ashta bhuja Durga.
Arthanareeswarar as Rishabanthikar, Pichadanar, Alingnamurthy, Natarajar with
Sivakami are also in the koshtam.
In prakaram Chera, Chozha and Pandya
Linggas, Viswanathar & Visalakshi, Agama Linga, Ashtothra Linga, Vinayagar,
Valli Devasena Subramaniyar ( With a vesara Vimana – elliptical shape with 3
kalasas ), Navagrahas, Bhairavar, Suryan, Nalvar, Valmiki Rishi, Shaniswarar,
Veerabadra ( ? may be Dakshinamurthy ) Santhana Kuravars, Saraswati,
Saptamatrikas, Chandran, Adiseshan and Maha Lakshmi.
Ambal sannadhi is on the right side
after the entrance arch. Ambal is in a separate sannadhi with balipedam,
Dwajasthambam and Simham. Ambal is facing south and in standing posture. Stucco
images of Ambal’s various forms are on the parapet wall of Ambal’s
sannadhi. The 15th Century Arunagirinathar
has sung hymns in praise of Lord Muruga of this temple. He also mentions the place as Thiruvaraththurai..

ARCHITECTUREThe main sanctum sanctorum consists
of sanctum antarala and arthamandapam. The Vimana is on a upana and a
padabandha adhisthana with tripatta kumuda. The koshtas / sala are little
protruding forwards. The Vimana is of two thalas. The Prastharam is of kapotha
style with Nasis, Bhuta vari is in the valabi and viyala varai in the Bhoomi
desam. Nagara Vimana with Vesara sikara. Giriva koshtas are extended forward. Koshta
images of 2nd tala are added during 2011.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONSThe place was called as
“Theerthapuri”, hence Lord Shiva is called as Theerthapureeswarar. The
Kumbhabishekam was conducted during 2011.
Since Moovar has sung hymns Lord
Shiva of this temple, the temple might have been existed before 7th
Century and latter reconstructed with Stone.
LEGENDSAs per the legend, the Rishabam’s
head is up and turned to right to stop flood in the river Neeva. Lord
Shiva calls the river as “Nee Vaa” – to come near - to performs their rituals
for the sapta Rishis.
ThiruGanasambandar has got Muthu
palanquin/ Pallaku, Muthu Kodai (Umbrella) and Pearl Symbol from Lord Shiva of this Temple. The
same was described in detail by Sekkizhar in Periya Puram.
Since Shaniswar and Angarakan
worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple, hence this is one of the Shani parikara
sthalam. Since Banyan tree is associated with Maham Nakshathra, people with
Maham star worships Lord Shiva of this temple.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONSApart from regular poojas, special
poojas are conducted on 10 days Masi Maham Brahmotsavam ( Feb- March ),
Vinayagar Chathurti, Navaratri, Skanda Sashti and Annabhishekam,
Thirukarthikai, Thirvadhirai, Makara Sankaranthi, Maha Shivaratri and Panguni
Uthiram.
