HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It
is believed that the original temple belongs to the 12th to 13th
centuries, 900 years old. During the Chozha period, this place was called Madura
Lakshmi Narayanapuram.
This
is one of the Kanthadai Vaathoola Desika Annavilappa Sri Mudaliandan swami’s
Abimana sthalam of Maha Vishnu. It was popular that both Periya Swamigals came
and submitted their Thiruvarathanam to Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal. Varthamana
Swamigal installed the images of Manavala Mamunigal and his disciple Appachiyar. Manavalamamunigal
called his disciple “Nam / Our Appachiar”, which shows the intimacy between
them.
A
Court judgement order (WMP No 20040 /95 and WMP No 125551/ 95) displays that the encroached lands
belonging to this temple was in-favour of the temple and the trespasser will
be prosecuted.
Srinivasa Perumal
The Krishnadevaraya period (1525 CE) Tamil inscription mixed with grantha available at Sri Adhipureeswarar Temple records, the equal sharing of the Tax income from the houses (1.25 panam for a month) with periphery markings as south of Pashathanagar koil, north of sulakkal, east of Veerathal koil to be given to Parvatheeswaramudayar and Veerathal (Kaliamman) for maintenance. The inscription also mentions a two thari ( தறி ) for Thirupana Perumal. (The Perumal mentioned in this inscription may be this temple's Perumal).
