Hero Stones / Navakandam, at Sandhai Thidal and Memorial Stones and Durgai at Sellandiamman Temple, Alukuli, Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Memorial Stones and Durgai Amman at Sri Sellandiamman Temple and Navakandam Hero stones at Weekly Market / Sandhai Thidal, at Alukuli in Tiruppur District was a part of “Ayyanar, Durgai Sculptures, Hero Stone and Memorial stones in Shiva & Amman Temples of Tiruppur and Erode Districts Visit, on 27^th and 28^th February 2022. This temple belongs to 18 Villages around this place.

DURGAI AMMAN

This Durgai is standing on a buffalo’s head with 4 hands. Lower hands are in abhaya and Varada hastam and upper hands are holding shanku and Chakra. She is wearing ornaments on her neck and ears.

MEMORIAL STONES

There are two memorial stones installed in the praharam facing east and both are identical in nature. Both Male and female are in Anjali hastam. On the top a lotus like object is hanging and bottom there is a stand in between them and what is the object on the stand is not known. Both are wearing ornaments on the neck and ears. Considering the tuft and big mustache, these memorial stones may belongs to 15^th to 16^th Century, Vijayanagara period.

HERO STONES / NAVAKANTA NADUKARKAL

These three Navakanta hero stones are erected in the Sandhai Thidal / Weekly market. The centre one is taller than the other two. In the centre the hero is cutting his head with his left hand and right hand is holding kattar. He is wearing dress below his waist. The ornaments and mala on the neck and ears are also shown.

The Shorter Navakanta hero stones are identical in nature. Similar dress, Holding Knife in the left hand and right hand position is upwards. What they are holding is not known. .

HOW TO REACH

The Temple with Hero stones are on the North east corner of the Village & North side of Shiva Temple.

This Place Alukuli is on the bus route Gobichettipalayam to Mettupalayam,  9.6 KM from Gobichettipalayam, 12 KM from Nambiyur, 49 KM from Tiruppur and 55 KM from Erode Junction.

Nearest Railway station is Tirupur.
