Sri Agatheeswarar Temple / அருள்மிகு அகிலாண்டேஸ்வரி சமேத அகத்தீஸ்வரர் திருக்கோவில், at Nungambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Agatheeswarar Temple was a part of Nungambakkam and Soolaimedu Shiva and MahaVishnu Temples. The three temples Sri Agatheeswarar Temple, Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple and Asalathamman temples are being maintained by the Hereditary Trustees. As per 1808 CE inscription this place was also called as Bomma puram.

This temple is believed to be one of the Thevara vaippu sthalam sung by Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal. It is believed that, this is one of the 108 Shiva Lingas installed by Sage Agasthiyar in Thondai Nadu and a Thevara Vaippu sthalam. Thirunavukkarau Swamigal has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of Agatheechuram along with Nandhikechuram, Mahalaechuram, Nagechuram, Kodeechuram, Kondeechuram, Kukkudechuram, Akkeechuram, Adakechuram, Ayaneechuram Aththeechuram, Siddheechuram and Ramechuram.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….

The temple is facing east with a large temple tank with neerazhi mandapam. The Rajagopuram is of 3 tiers. Kambathadi Vinayagar, Kodimaram, balipeedam and idabam are after the Rajagopuram and before Mukha mandapam. Stucco dwarapalakas are in the mukha mandapam. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar is little elevated position. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In the inner praharam, Utsavars, Nalvars, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Pichadanar, Mohini, Natarajar and Santhana kuravas. Ambal Ahilandeswari is in a separate sannidhi facing south.

In the outer praharam, Ramalinga Adigalar, Agathiyar with his consort Lobamudra, Varasiddhi Vinayagar, Ayyappa Kala mandapam, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Maha Lakshmi, Anna Poorani and Kasi Visalakshi Sannidhi ( Sitting and Standing Postures, ), Kasi Viswanathar, Yaga Salai, Navagrahas, Suryan, Chandran, Nandhi with his Consort and Bas Reliefs of Donors

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam and pattigai on lotus platform. The Bhitti starts with vedhika and the pilasters are of Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, mandi, palagai and vettu pothyal. The prastaram consists of Valapi with lotus petals, Kapotam and Bhoomi desam. A 2 tier stucco vesara vimanam is above the bhoomi desam. Stucco images of Shiva's various forms are in thala, greeva and karna koshtams.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

During Chozha period, this place Nungambakkam was in Puliyur Nadu in Puliyur Kottam and the same was mentioned in 11^th Century Rajendra Chozha’s copper plate. This Shiva temple was constructed by Nungambakkam Subbu Deivanayagam Mudaliar, who worked as interpreter / Dubash with Britishers.

The inscription ( 1808 CE ) on the east side wall records that lands, Chathram, Thoppu was bought and gifted to Sri Agatheeswara Swamy Akilandeswari Amman temples by R R Deivanayaga Mudaliar. After him, his son Subbaraya Mudaliar and grand son Deivanayagam are taken care of these gifts.

The Navagraha Sannidhi was built and consecrated by Nu Sa Rajapathar Mudaliar, the parampara trustee of this temple on 17^th June 1948. Kodimaram was installed 24^th August 1980 by him.

Ashta bandhana maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 31^st August 1994

Renovation of Temple tank was done by the Rotary Club of Madras on 18^th January 2002.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted to the temple tank Neerazhi mandapam after renovation on 05^th December 2003.

The temple tank was cleaned, a borewell drilled and lightings provided on the banks of temple tank by Dr Revathi Srinivasan and Dr Kamala Selvaraj, both are daughters of the renowned film actor Mr Gemini Ganesan. The work was completed on 24^th April 2004.

Renovation of Vimanas, Painting of all Vimanas, construction of Entrance arch, Thirupani was carried out for sannidhis of Mahalakshmi, Durgai, Saraswati, Visalakshi, Annapoorani, Santhana kuravars carried out and Ashta bandhana Maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 10^th July 2006.

An inscription tablet records the trustees of the temples Sri Agatheeswarar Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal and Asaathamman Temples. The inscription is reads as .......

The road in front of the temple was laid by Mr Basanth, Mrs Mala Basanth and their son Kailash from Bangalore on 19^th August 2015.

From Tamil Hindu ( August 11^th 2022 ) news paper the news appeared about the asset worth of 150 crores was reclaimed by the HR & CE Department. The houses and building spread in 15 acres of land encroached and rent was not paid for the past 30 years. It was also understood many malpractices were followed in the registration of assets.

LEGENDS

As per the legend, a Vaishnava king, Bommarajan who ruled Bommarajapuram of Thondai mandalam was suffering from a soolai decease/ stomach ache. To get rid of the decease the King prayed Maha Vishnu, through his inner feelings. Maha Vishnu came in the King’s dream and advised to take bathe in the tank and worship Shiva and Parvati. The King had done as per the instruction and got relieved from the decease. Since the King worshiped Shiva through the inner feelings, Shiva is called as Agathu Eswarar, latter the same has got corrupted as Agatheeswarar. A different form of this legend is told for Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple.

Sukra who lost the eyesight in Maha Vishnu’s Vamana avatar, did a penance on Lord Shiva. At the same time Ambal also did a penance of Lord Shiva. Satisfied the penance of both Lord Shiva was little confused to give boon first to whom..?. Ambal asked Shiva to give Sukra first. In lieu of that Ambal asked Sukra, that he should not affect, those worships her on Fridays. For the same Sukra accepted. Hence it is believed to get rid of Sukra dosha, on every Fridays Ladies used to carry the palanquin of Ambal as Sukravara Amman in procession. There is no separate sannidhi for Sukravara amman, but the procession deity of Sri Akilandeswari is called as Sukravara Amman.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

Apart from four kala Poojas and 2 times abhishekams, special poojas are conducted on every Fridays Sukravara Amman procession, Pradosham, Karthigai Deepam, Margazhi arudra darshan, Last Friday of Thai month 108 Vilakku Poojas, Masi maham, Maha Shivaratri, Panguni Uthiram.
