Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple / ஸ்ரீ காசிவிஸ்வ நாதர் கோயில், Peddanaickenpet, Sowcarpet, George Town, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple was a part of Vyasarpadi temples and Siddhar Madams visited in and around Vyasarpadi on 21st August 2022. This Shiva temple is on the Krishnappa ( Naicken ) Tank Street, Peddanaickenpet, a part of Sowcarpet, close to Padmanabha Theatre. This place was once dominated by the Telugu-speaking peoples, but now most of them are North Indians, especially Jains.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east with an entrance arch. Sri Narayana Bavaji’s Jeeva Samadhi is on the right side of the entrance with a Photo and a Balipeedam. Stucco images of  Lord Shiva with Parvati, Vinayagar, Murugan, and Nandi. The Mukha mandapam top also has similar stucco images along with Ambal. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam / kodimaram and Rishabam are in front of mukha mandapam. Sanctum sanctorum is a little elevated level. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai are in the koshtam.

In praharam, Nalvar, Vinayagar, Saptamatrikas and Veerabhadra, Mahaganapathi, SriValli Devasena Subramaniyar, Srinivasa Perumal with Sridevi and Bhudevi, Natarajar, and Somaskandar. In the outer praharam A Shiva lingam with Rishabam, Ko sala, Ayyappan, Navagrahas, Suriyan and Chandran.
  

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a open mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam. Brahmakantha pilasters with Pushpa pothyal are on the bhitti. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam. An eka tala vesara vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
This temple was constructed during 1806 CE and may be the  ancestors of Sri K Nallamuthu Mudaliar. The place name and the contributors of the temple tank name indicate that this place Peddanaickenpet existed since the Vijayanagara period. The temple tank is named after, the Krishnappa Naicken, as  Krishnappa Naicken Tank, may be one of the contributors to this temple or Vijayanagara Nayak’s representative or maybe both. There is a street in the name of Krishnappa ( Naicken ) Agraharam Street, close to the temple.  

The flooring of the mukha mandapam was paved with granite in the year 1951.

The temple will be kept open between 06.00 hrs to 11.30 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

The temple is on Krishnappa ( Naicken ) Street and the place is called Peddanaickenpet, Sowcarpet a part of George Town.
The temple is about 1.5 KM from Basin Bridge Railway station, 2.2 KM from Chennai Central, and 12.5 KM from Koyambedu Bus terminus.
The nearest Railway Junction is Chennai Central.
