Sakthi Vilas Bus Body building Workshop / TNSTC Bus Building and Depot, Poraiyar, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this TNSTC Bus building and Depot, the south India’s first body building work shop, an  old Heritage building, at Poraiyar was a part of Shiva and Maha Vishnu Temples around Sirkazhi Visit on 1^st & 2^nd July 2023.

This bus depot was founded by Mr Veerappa Pillai, for the building buses to Sakthivilas, one of the biggest Bus Service in South part of Tamil Nadu. He started his bus service initially with an old car purchased from his previous owner in 1922. Slowly the business was expanded, acquired buses to run between, Porayar to mayiladuthurai, Kumbakonam, Nagapattinam, Nannilam, Pattukkottai, etc and established Porayar as the head Quarters in 1943. Most of the equipments were imported from foreign countries and also hired qualified Engineers.

The business touched its peak till 1947, but also it has to face challenges like, world war, legal battles between the competitors etc. After conquering all the challenges, in 1956, he made his son Parthasarathy as an incharge of the Sakthi Vilas. The Sakthi Vilas again faced challenge of nationalisation of bus Services by the Government in 1972, after the demise of Mr Veerappa pillai in 1963. The TNSTC, bus Depot cum service is functioning in the same place.
