Sri Chennakesava Perumal Temple / ஸ்ரீ சென்னகேசவ பெருமாள் கோயில், புதுகும்மிடிபூண்டி / Pudugummidipoondi, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Chennakesava Perumal Temple at Pudugummidipoondi, was a part of “Shiva, Maha Vishnu, Saptamatrikas and Jain Tirthankara Temples Visit”, in and around Gummidipoondi and Minjur on 13th May 2023. When I was returning to Railway station, happened to see this 16th to 17th Century Vijayanagara Period Maha Vishnu temple with some unique features.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing North with an entrance arch / mini Gopuram with mandapam. Stucco images of Chennakesava Perumal and Sridevi and Bhudevi are on the mini gopuram. Dwajasthambam, balipeedam and Garudan are after the entrance Gopuram.   

Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar Sri Chennakesava Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhudevi in the sanctum. Utsava murtis are in front of Moolavar.  Kostams are empty now. Thayar sannidhi was built at a latter period without Vimanam facing North, on the right side of the main sanctum sanctorum.

ARCHITECTURE
The total temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and Maha mandapam. The reliefs of Fish, Lizard, Snake with Sun & Moon represents the Solar and Lunar eclipses are on the ceiling of the maha mandapam.

The total temple was built with bricks. Vahana mandapa was built with stone. The sanctum sanctorum is on a rectangular base. The adhisthanam is of Pada bandha adhisthanam with jagathi and three patta kumudam. A salakara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.

The Vimanam is eka tala. The maha nasis has the stucco images of Sarasvati on one side and Gajalakshmi is on the other side. Maha Vishnu’s avatars and forms, stucco images are in greeva koshtam




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple belongs to Vijayanagara period, A 1643 CE inscription stone with donors images is fixed on the top of the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum.

Thirupani was started in 1969  by G Velu Chettiar, a managing Trustee and completed by his son in 1977 and maha samprokshanam was conducted on 21st March 1977.

Again Maha samprokshanam was conducted on 07th June 2004 after completing the thirupani on 31st May 2004.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Hanuman jayanti, Krishnar Jayanti, Vaikunta Ekadasi, etc,.


TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept opened from 6.30 hrs. The present managing Trustee is staying in the temple itself.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is about 3.8 KM from Gummidipoondi railway station,  16 KM from Ponneri, 20 KM from Periyapalayam, 43 KM from Chennai central and 60.6 KM from Tiruvallur.
Nearest railway station is Gummidipoondi.
