Sri Adhi Narayana Perumal Temple / Sri Aadhi Narayana Perumal Temple ( Meerugasirisha Nakatra Parihara Sthalam)/ ஸ்ரீ ஆதிநாராயண பெருமாள் கோயில், எண்கண் / Engan, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Adhi Narayana Perumal Temple at Engan/Enkan was a part of Shiva and Maha Vishnu Temples around Sirkazhi Visit on 1^st & 2^nd July 2023. The Adhi Narayana Perumal temple is on the south side of the Shiva temple abutting the Compound wall. This is a unique temple, where the moolavar is on Garuda vahana and gives Garuda seva darshan daily.

This Maha Vishnu Adhi Narayana Perumal is in the same Complex abutting Shiva temple.  Moolavar Sri Narayana Perumal is on the shoulders of Garuda ( Garuda Seva ). There are no images in the Koshtam.

ARCHITECTURE

Adhi Narayana  Perumal Temple faces east with a 4-tier Rajagopuram. The temple consists of a sanctum sanctorum and a mukha mandapam. The Adhisthanam was constructed with stone and above adhistanam was constructed with bricks. An ekatala dravida Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

The antiquity of the temple is not known.  Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on, 12^th July 2000, and 08^th April 2012.

LEGENDS

During ancient times this place was in Sabeeba forest ( Vanni maram ).  Brugu Muni did a penance on Sriman Narayanan. The Chozha King also came to the forest to hunt Lions, which disturbed Brugu Muni’s penance. Angered Brugu Muni, cursed the king for getting Lion’s face. The Chozha King begged Muni to pardon him and asked for a solution to get rid of the curse. The Brugu muni was told to bathe in the Vrutha Kaveri ( Vettaru ) and worship Sriman Narayanan. Shanmuga Peruman on Mayil Vahanam and Sriman Narayanan on the Garuda Vahana came under the Vanni tree and blessed the King. The King also got rid of the curse and became normal.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on all the Vaishna function days. This is a Mirukaseeshthra Nakshathra temple and Nithya Garuda Seva.

The temple is about 1.4 KM from Thanjavur- Nagapattinam, high road, 12 KM from Thiruvarur, 29 KM from Kumbakonam, 48 KM from Mayiladuthurai,  73 KM from Sirkazhi, and  324 KM from Chennai.

Nearest Railway Station is Thiruvarur.
