HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple was built by Pazhuvettaraiyar Kings, who ruled under the Chozha dynasty. This temple may belong to 9th to 10th century. Chozha period inscriptions are found on the wall of the Ardha mandapam.

As per the inscriptions, this place was a Brahmadeya gifted to Brahmins, called Sirupazhuvur in Kundrakootram. The temple was called Maravan Eswaram. Shiva was called Maravan Eswara gruhatthu Mahadevar ( Now called Pasupatheeswarar temple ).

Pazhuvettaraiyar Kumaran Maravan’s period inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp by the Queen and daughter of Kongani Mazhavaraiyar. (  Pazhuvettarayar Kumaran Maravan, ruled this area under Aditha Chozha-I, 893 CE, from the Keezhaiyur inscriptions ARE 350, 355 of 1924, the same king also ruled under Parantaka Chozha, from Lalgudi & Thirupazhanam inscriptions ARE 148 of 1928 ). From this evidence, it is presumed that Kumaran Maravan might have constructed this temple in his name as Maravan Eswara gruhatthu Mahadevar Temple.
