The visit to this Sri Agastheeswarar
Temple at Karunilam / Karambur was a part of “Shiva & Vishnu Temples, Hero
Stones and Heritage Sites Visit”, from Ponmar to Karunilam, near Guduvanchery,
in Chengalpattu District on 24th October 2023.
This temple also called Ardhanareeswarar Temple is in the Southeast direction of the Village, in the midst
of paddy fields ( Kazhani – கழனி ).

Some of the salient features of this
temple are...
The temple is facing east with
balipeedam and Rishabam. Moolavar is a little tall on a square avudayar. In
koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.
In praharam, Ardhanareeswarar (
Ardhanareeswarar is 4 hands on the right side holding Mazhu and Abhaya
hastam. On the left side all the features of Ambal with Pasam and varada hastam,
Dakshinamurthy ( facing South ), Chandikeswara, Navagrahas, Bairavar, Chandran, and Suriyan. A
Chandikeswarar is kept as a loose sculpture in the Nandavanam.
ARCHITECTURE
The complete temple was constructed
with bricks and cement concrete. The sanctum sanctorium is on upanam and the
adhistanam is of pada bandha adhistanam with threepatta kumudam. The prastaram
consists of Valapi, kapotam. An Ekatala vesara vimanam is on the sanctorum.
Shiva and Parvati, Dakshinamurthy, Brahma
and Durgai are on the greeva koshtam.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple may belong to the Chozha period, considering the iconography of Suriyan. The temple was
reconstructed in recent years.
Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on
06th May 2018.

Apart from regular poojas special
poojas are conducted on pradosham and Maha Shivaratri etc,.
