Nandinadesvarar Temple/Sree NanthiNatheswarar Temple, ஸ்ரீநந்திநாதேஸ்வரர் கோயில், வடக்கு பொய்கைநல்லூர்/North Poigainallur / Poikainallur, Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Nandhinatheswarar Temple at North Poigainallur near Nagapattinam was a part of the “Visit to Shiva, Murugan, Divya Desams, Buddha, and Jain Temples around Nagapattinam” on 4th September 2024. This temple is one of the Shiva Temples in and around Nagapattinam, where Devotees visit Maha Shivaratri day in the form of Shivala ottam… சிவாலய ஓட்டம்.


This is one of the Vaippu Sthalam and Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal sang hymns ( 6-70-11 ) in praise of Shiva of this temple.  '

'பொய்கை நாட்டுத் திருவையாறு' எனக் கல்வெட்டுச் செய்தி உள்ளதால், பொய்கை நல்லூர் என்பதை பொய்கை, நல்லூர் என இரு தலமாக கொள்ளலுதலும் பொருந்தும். 'பொய்கை' என்பது அந்நாட்டின் தலை நகராக இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும்.   

புலிவலம் புத்தூர் புகலூர் புன்கூர்
        புறம்பயம் பூவணம் பொய்கை நல்லூர்
வலிவலம் மாற்பேறு வாய்மூர் வைகல்
        வலஞ்சுழி வாஞ்சியம் மருகல் வன்னி
நிலமலிநெய்த் தானத்தோ டெத்தானத்தும்
        நிலவுபெருங் கோயில்பல கண்டால் தொண்டீர்
கலிவலிமிக் கோனைக்கால் விரலாற் செற்ற
        கயிலாய நாதனையே காண லாமே.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..
The temple faces east with three-tier Rajaagopuram on the east and south sides. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Rishabam are after the east side Rajagopuram. Stucco Dwarapalakas are in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum. Moolavar is small on a round avudayar. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Durgai.

In Praharam Shiva Lingas, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramanian, Gajalakshmi, Vana Durgai, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas, Shiva Linga banas, Nagars, Dakshinamurthy, Bairavar, Suriyan ( housed in a same place, maybe the original idols ) and Bairavar.

Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing south in ardha mandapam. Stucco Dwarapalakis are at the entrance of Ambal sannidhi. Ambal is in a standing posture with pasa angusam in the upper hands and lower hands in abhaya varada hastam.



ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. The Sanctum Sanctorum is on a upanam. The adhistanam do not confirm the temple architectural style. Pilasters are Brakhmakantha pilasters with vettu pothiyal. The prastaram consists of valapi with madhalai and kapotam with nasi kudus. The temple was built with stone from Upanam to prastaram. The superstructure, Vimanam is of eka tala vesara style. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the greeva koshtam.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the original temple belongs to the 8th to 9th Century since it is considered as one of the Thevara Vaippu sthalam. Re-constructed as a stone temple during Chozha period and later received contributions from Vijayanagara Nayakas and Marathas. Again reconstructed in recent years. The Chozha period original idols of Bairavar, Dakshinamurthy, Shiva Linga banams, and Chandikeswarar are installed in a small shrine.   

'பொய்கை நாட்டுத் திருவையாறு' எனக் கல்வெட்டுச் செய்தி உள்ளதால், பொய்கை நல்லூர் என்பதை பொய்கை, நல்லூர் என இரு தலமாக கொள்ளலுதலும் பொருந்தும். 'பொய்கை' என்பது அந்நாட்டின் தலை நகராக இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும்.   

LEGENDS
As per the legend, at the End of each yuga, due to pralaya all the living things will be destroyed, submerged in water. Ma Parvati worships Shiva during that night doing 4 kala poojas to spring back the living things and mankind. That Night is called Maha Shivaratri. Devotees visit this temple on that day in the form of Shivalaya Ottam – சிவாலய ஓட்டம்.  

The head of Shiva ganas, Nandhi worshipped Shiva of this temple to get rid of the curse.


POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Vinayagar Chaturthi, Amasya, and pournami days.

The temple will be kept open between 07.00 hrs to 09.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
This temple at Vada ( North ) Pogainallur is about 2 KM from Nagapattinam to Velankanni Road.
From Nagapattinam after 6.4 KM on Nagapattinam to Velankanni Road, turn left and from there the temple will be about 2 KM after crossing the Railway line.
The temple is about 8 KM from Velankanni and Nagapattinam.
Nearest railway Station is Nagapattinam.
