The
Visit to this Sri Kailasanathar Temple at Cholapuram was a part of Rajendra
Chozha War Trophy Trail, a Heritage walk organised by the Kumbakonam Vattara
Varalatru Aayvu Sangam - கும்பகோணம் வட்டார வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம்
on
28th and 29th September 2024.
This
Sri Kailasanathar Temple is one of the three Shiva temples built in a straight
line (South to North), in Cholapuram Village. This Shiva temple might have been
the 1st built Shiva Temple in this Village.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple is facing east with a mottai gopuram. Kambathadi, Vinayagar, Two
Balipeedam, and Rishabam are in front of the temple. Moolavar is on a round
avudayar. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of Sanctum Sanctorum with Vinayagar
on the left side. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma,
Brahma and Durgai.
Ambal
is in a separate Temple on the left side of Moolavar temple. Ambal is in a standing
posture with abhaya varada hastam.
In
Praharam, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramanian, two GajaLakshmi, and 9
Shiva Lingams.
The
Natarajar temple is without the Natarajar image, and it was said that the image is
kept at Thiruvarur for safety reasons.
ARCHITECTURE
The
whole temple was built with stone from upanam to greevam. The temple consists
of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. The sanctum
sanctorum is on a raised Upanam, and prati bandha Adhistanam with pada Jagathy,
Vrudha kumudam, and prativari. The Bhitti starts with vedikai. The Pilasters are Vishnu kantha kantha pilasters with square bases, kalasam, kudam, mandi,
palakai, and Vettu pothyal.
The
prastaram consists of valapi with bhuta ganas, kapotam with nasi kuds, and
viyyalavari. The vimanam over the prastaram is of 1 tala (total two talas,
which includes adi tala), greevam and a Dravida Vimanam, Shiva,
Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are in the tala, and greeva koshtam. Maha
nasis are on the 4 cardinal directions and alpa nasis are in between maha
nasis.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
original temple belongs to the 11th to 12th Century Chozha
period, but a little earlier than Sri Bairaveswarar temple, about 200 meters away
from this temple. Later received contributions from Chozhas,
Vijayanagaras, Nayakas, and Marathas.
An 11th-century fragment inscription is found on the wall of the
entrance mottai Gopuram.
The
Natarajar Temple built with Vavvalnethi mandapas, may be built during Nayakas /
Maratas periods.

LEGENDS
It
is believed that the celestial wedding of Shiva and Parvati was held at Mount
Kailash. For this wedding the Devas, Munis, and Maharishis attended. Also, Mount
Kailash is believed to be a holy place for Hindus.

Oru
kala pooja is conducted in the morning, pradosham and Maha Shivaratri are
conducted.

The
temple at Cholapuram is about 500 meters from the Main Road Turning and Chozhapuram Bus Stop.
This
place Cholapuram is on Kumbakonam to Chennai Road, 6.5 KM from Thirupanandal,
12.5 KM from Kumbakonam, and 35 KM from Mayiladuthurai.
Nearest
Railway Station is Kumbakonam.
