The visit
to this Sri Adinatha Digambar Jain Temple, one of the UNESCO, World Heritage
Sites, Khajuraho, was a part of the “Bhopal, Udayagiri Rock Cut Caves,
Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, Sanchi, Bhojpur, and Khajuraho – of Madhya Pradesh
Heritage Walk” organized by the எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடைக்குழு, between 25th and 28th December 2024.
Eastern
Group, Khajuraho.
The
Eastern group closer to the Khajuraho village has three Brahmanical temples
Brahma, Vamana, and Javari, and three Jain temples Parswanatha, Shantinatha (Ghantal),
and Adinatha.
Though the sanctums of the Jain temples house images of the Tirthankaras, the sculptures outside and the temple plans strongly indicate that they were originally Hindu temples. The pedestal of the Adinath has the image of Garuda as proof.
Adinatha
Temple (late 11th century)
To
the north of the Parswanatha Temple and sharing the same compound is the
Adinatha Temple. Of the original temple, only the sanctum and the vestibule
survive. Without an ambulatory, it is the closest to the Vamana Temple in style
and plan. The top row of the walls shows a band of flying angels. A recent
image of Adinatha has been enshrined in place of the old one, of which only the
pedestal survives.
