Chaturbhuj Temple/ चतुर्भुज मंदिर, Rina, Road, Sevagram, Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.

The visit to this Chaturbhuj Temple, one of the UNESCO, World Heritage Sites, Khajuraho, was a part of the “Bhopal, Udayagiri Rock Cut Caves, Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, Sanchi, Bhojpur, and Khajuraho – of Madhya Pradesh Heritage Walk” organized by the எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடைக்குழு, between 25th and 28th December 2024.

Southern Group
The two temples, Chaturbhuj and Duladeva, comprise the southern group and are a kilometre south of the Khajuraho village.

Chaturbhuj Temple (1100 CE)
Other than the Lalguan Mahadeva Temple, this is the only other west-facing temple. Similar to the Javari Temple, the ambulatory, vestibule, and mandapa are missing, and the entrance is small.

The conspicuous absence of erotic sculptures is quite unique. The sanctum has a sunken floor to accommodate the nine-foot-high massive image of four-armed Dakshinamurti Shiva in such a way that when the image is on the pedestal, the feet are on the same level as the doorway. One of the finest sculptures of Khajuraho, it is the only one rendered in the tribhanga pose.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The Chaturbhuja temple was constructed during the reign of the Chandela King Jayavarman. According to one inscription, Kalinjara voluntarily abdicated the throne and went to the divine river to wash away his sins.
