The visit
to this Javari Temple, one of the UNESCO, World Heritage Sites, Khajuraho, was a part of the “Bhopal, Udayagiri
Rock Cut Caves, Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, Sanchi, Bhojpur, and Khajuraho – of
Madhya Pradesh Heritage Walk” organized by the எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடைக்குழு, between 25th and 28th December 2024.
The Khajuraho temple complex is divided into three groups: Western, Eastern, and Southern. The Chausath Yogini and Lalguan Mahadeva temples are exempt from the above three groups because they are the farthest away.
The
Eastern Group is small compared to the Western Group. The temples in this group are
dedicated to Shiva, Maha Vishnu, and Jainism. The Eastern consists of the
following temples.
Javari
Temple (1075-1100 CE)
The
temple dedicated to Vishnu resembles the Chaturbhuj Temple and likewise has no
pradakshina. Except for the sanctum shikhara, which has been restored, the temple
stands intact and is the smallest among the developed Khajuraho temples.
Circular frames crowned with a diamond arch, niches in the lower row of the walls, and a unique feature of the temple and the ornate four-looped makara torana embellish the entrance.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
This
temple is also one of the oldest temples of Khajuraho. Historians believe that
this temple may have been constructed by Chandella rulers during 1075-1100 CE.
