The visit
to this Apsidal Shrine, Buddhist Monument at Sanchi, and a UNESCO Heritage Site,
was a part of the “Bhopal, Udayagiri Rock Cut Caves, Bhimbetka Rock Shelters,
Sanchi, Bhojpur, and Khajuraho – of Madhya Pradesh Heritage Walk” organized by
the எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடைக்குழு, between 25th and 28th December 2024. This temple was believed to be at the forefront of Gajaprishta Vimana Temples of
Thondai mandalam, in Tamil Nadu.
Temple No. 18 belongs to the Seventh Century CE. The temple
was constructed in an apsidal form (Gajaprishta/Gajabrushta) with an apse a
central nave and side aisles standing on the foundations of an earlier apsidal
hall of Mauryan or Sunga period. The carved motifs on its tapering pillars are also found in the caves of Maharashtra. The temple was restored during the
tenth of the Eleventh century CE. At present, only the basement and Mandapa
pillars exist.
