The visit to this Hero Stambas or Sati Pillars State Museum for Tribal and Folk Art, Khajuraho, and ASI Museum at Sanchi was a part of the “Bhopal, Udayagiri Rock Cut Caves, Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, Sanchi, Bhojpur, and Khajuraho – of Madhya Pradesh Heritage Walk” organized by the எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடைக்குழு, between 25th and 28th December 2024.
These Hero Sthambas/Hero Stones or Sati Pillars erected are brought from various places in Madhya Pradesh. It is interesting to note the practice of erecting similar Hero Sthambas/ Hero Stones in memory of their ancestors by their descendants throughout India, since ancient times. Since their main job was to rear cattle, the Hero Sthambas had the bas relief of Cattle, Killing the wild animals, which they tried to kill the cattle and some Heroic actions of their ancestors.
Different symbols are installed at a certain place to keep alive the memory of the dead person and to be inspired by their specific deeds in the Gond, Kol, and Bharia tribes of Madhya Pradesh. These pillars are made of wood, stone, and clay in different sizes, and figures of animals, birds, etc. are carved in them.

SATI PILLAR AT SANCHI
In the center of the museum's grounds, a group of five pillars with reliefs and a defaced Nagari inscription dating to the 13th century CE stand in situ. The reliefs on these pillars signify the prevalence of chastity in Hindu society in the area around Sanchi during that time. The reliefs depict four significant scenes.1. The husband and wife worship a Shiva Linga.
2. The wife massaging the feet of her husband.
3. The husband is fighting with his adversary.
4. The figures of the sun and the moon symbolize the fact that the fame of the wife's devotion shall endure as long as the Sun and the moon exist.

It is surprising to note that the Hero/Sati Stones and Hero Sthambas erected are very similar to the Tamil Nadu Hero/Sati stones, which are almost more than 1000 km, without transport and communication facilities between the two places. This signifies the similar thinking of human beings.
