HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
During the 9th – 10th Century Chozha period, 4 Shiva temples were constructed in each direction of the Chozha’s capital Pazhayarai city, and this temple is in the South direction and hence called Thenthali. Since this temple is considered one of the Thevara Vaippu Sthalam, this temple might have existed before the 8th century Pallava period.

Maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 29th March 2013.

LEGENDS
It is believed that Parasurama got the weapon Parasu after he did penance on Shiva of this temple. Hence, Shiva is called Parasunathar.

After getting the weapon, Sage Parusurama killed his mother as per the instruction of his father, Jamadagini. Due to this, he incurred Brahmahathi dosha. In order to get rid of the dosham, he came to Muzhaiyur and prayed to Lord Siva after installing a Shiva Linga. The Shiva Lingam is a dhara Lingam with 8 flat surfaces.

Nandhini, the daughter of the celestial Cow Kamadhenu, worshipped Shiva of this temple.

Since the Bhutaganas of Shiva played the musical instrument called Muzha/Muzhai, this place is called Muzhaiyur.
