Palkulathi Amman Kovil / பால்குளத்தி அம்மன் கோவில்/ Tomb of King Rajaraja Chola-I (believed)/ முதலாம் ராஜராஜ சோழனின் பள்ளிப்படைக் கோயில் (நம்பப்படும்), Udaiyalur, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to Sri Palkulathi Amman Temple and the Tomb of Chozha Kinga Rajaraja at Udaiyalur, Kumbakonam, was part of the Shiva and Vishnu temples visit on 08th March 2025, the previous day of the “Sembiyan Mahadeviyar Temples Heritage Tour” organized by கும்பகோணம் வட்டார வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம், on 09^th March 2025.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum and the mukha mandapam. An eka tala salakara vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

This temple plays a major role in the history of the Chozha dynasty. The open mukha mandapa right-side pillar has the inscription. The temple’s gate is fixed on the pillar, which obstructs the view of the full inscription. The inscription reads as...

LEGENDS

As per the legend, while Shiva was explaining the meaning of “Brahma thathuva,”. Muruga came to the spot without intimation. So, Shiva cursed Muruga to be born on the earth.  Muruga came to Kongeyapuram and did penance under the bilva tree. As per the divine voice, he created the Temple tank called Kumara Theertham and worshipped Shiva, and was relieved from the curse.

In another legend, the king Ajamaharaj was suffering from leprosy. Vasishta Maharishi advised the king to take a dip in the “Kumara Theertha” and worship Sri Kailasanathar of this temple. The king came to this place, Kangeyapuram, and prayed to Kamadhenu to pour the milk in the Kumara Theertha. Hence, the temple tank Kumara Theertha is called “Pal Kulam” (Milk – பால் in Tamil). Since the Amman temple is located on the banks of the tank, Amman is called Palkulathu Amman.

HOW TO REACH

The temple at Udaiyalur is 4.3 km from Patteeswaram, 5 km from Valangaiman, and 9.1 km from Kumbakonam.

The nearest Railway Station is Kumbakonam.

TOMB OF THE CHOZHA KING RAJARAJA-I. 

The Shiva Lingam with the Shed is claimed as a tomb of the Chozha King, Rajaraja-I, based on the Udaiyalur, Palkulathi Amman Temple Mandapa pillar inscription. But historians don’t agree on this. The Shiva Lingam is not with avudayar. A meta color sheet mandapam was built over the Shiva Lingam. The top and sides are covered with rudraksha beads. Regular poojas are conducted to the Shiva Lingam by P. Jeyaraman.

The inscription on the pillar of the Sri Palkuthali Amman Temple records the death of the Chozha King Rajaraja-I.

Dharasuram Temple was constructed by the Chola King Rajaraja-II, and he was called Rajakambeeran. The inscription on the compound wall of Sri Kailasanathar Temple, Udaiyalur mentions that “இந்நாட்டுபள்ளிப்படை ராஜராஜ கம்பீரேசுவரமுடைய மகாதேவர்கு..”. From this, it may be presumed that this Pallipadai may belong to Rajaraja-II and not Rajaraja-I. As per Historians and experts, the real fact will be known only after the excavation by the Archaeology Department.
