The visit to this Sri Brahmanandeeswarar Temple, at
Pazhayarai, Kumbakonam, was a part of the Shiva and Vishnu temples visit on 08th
March 2025, the previous day of the “Sembiyan Mahadeviyar Temples Heritage Tour”
organized by கும்பகோணம்
வட்டார வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம், on 09th March 2025.
This Shiva temple is on the banks of the TR Patnam
River. During the 9th – 10th Century Chozha period, 4 Shiva
temples were constructed in each direction of the Chozha’s capital, Pazhayarai city, and this temple is in the west direction and hence called Metrali or Thirumetrali.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east, with an entrance arch.
Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the temple. Moolavar is on a square
avudayar. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and
Durgai.
Ambal is in a separate temple with a sanctum
sanctorum, an ardha mandapam, and a nagara vimanam. Ambal is in a standing
posture with abhaya varada hastam.
In praharam, Chandikeswarar, Shiva Lingas, Nagars, and Ambal sannidhi.
ARCHITECTURE
Both the Shiva temple and the Ambal temple are built with
bricks. The same was plastered and painted. The entire temple was built with
bricks. The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam.
The sanctum sanctorum is in a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta
kumudam, and pattikai. The bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are of
Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, palakai, and Vettu pothyal. The
prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam with nasi kudus. One tala brick vesara
vimanam is on the prastaram. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are
on the tala and greeva koshtas.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the temple authorities, the original brick
temple is more than 1400 years old, and renovation is in progress. Maha
kumbhabhishekam is yet to be conducted.
Adita Chozha-I’s (871 – 907 CE) wife and Queen Azhisi Kattadigan donated gold to burn a perpetual lamp at this temple.
LEGENDS
It is believed that Brahma, Nandi, Naga Kanni, and
Chandram worshipped Shiva of this temple to get rid of their sins. Naga Kanni is in the Deva koshta and blesses the
devotees.
After Thirupattur, Brahma is in a separate
sannidhi. Devotees worship Shiva to get rid of Brahmahathi dosha and Naga
dosha. And this is a parihara sthalam for Rahu and Ketu doshas.

Apart from oru kala pooja, special poojas are conducted
on pradosha, Maha Shivaratri, etc.

hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 19.30 hrs.

The temple called Thirumetrali at Pazhayarai
is about 2 km from Patteeswaram and 10 km from Kumbakonam.
