Kailasanathar Temple, Melacauvery / கைலாசநாதர் கற்பகாம்பாள் திருக்கோவில், Vaikkolkattu Street, Valayapettai Agraharam, மேலக்காவேரி/Melacavery, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to Sri Kailasanathar Temple, Melacauvery, Kumbakonam, was part of the Shiva and Vishnu temples visit on 08th March 2025, the previous day of “Sembiyan Mahadeviyar Temples Heritage Tour” organized by கும்பகோணம் வட்டார வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம்on 09th March 2025. Thanks to Mrs. Vidhya, who accompanied me to this temple. This temple is very close to the Native Higher Secondary School Playground. This is believed to be one of the Thevara Vaippu Sthalam sung by Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with a 3-tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in the mukha mandapam. Dwarapalakas, Vinayagar, and Murugan are on both sides of the entrance to the ardha mandapam. In koshtam, Dakshinamurthy, and Lingothbavar.




In praharam Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Sundareswarar, Meenakshi, Durga Devi, Kala Bairavar, Saniswarar, Suryan, and Chandran. Thirugnanasambandar is along with his wife Chokki in the mandapam. Loose sculptures of Vinayagar. Chandikeswarar, Bairavar, and Nagars are on the back side of the temple.

Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing south. Dwarapalakis are on both sides of the entrance. Ambal is in a standing posture with abhaya varada hastam. 



ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, the ardha mandapam, and the maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, vrudha kumudam, and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are Vishnu kantha pilasters with kalasam kudam, palakai, and pushpa pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam with nasi kudus. An Eka tala vesara vimanam is on the bhumi desam. Stucco images of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are on the tala and greeva koshtams.

The mandapas are of vavval nethi mandapas built during the Maratha period.



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple belongs to the 10th to 11th Century and may have been constructed during the Sundara Chozha or Rajaraja-I’s period. The mandapas are of the vavvalnethi mandapas style, constructed during the Maratha period.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 21st March 2005.

LEGENDS
Believed to be one of the Thevara Paadal Petra Vaippu sthalam, sung by Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal. The hymns will be updated.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from oru kala pooja, special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Vinayagar Chaturthi, Guru Peyarchi day, etc.

The temple will be open from 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

The Sri Kailasanathar Temple, Valayapettai Agraharam, at Melacavery, is on the banks of the Kaveri River, 4.0 km from the Kumbakonam Railway Station.
The nearest Railway Station is Kumbakonam.
