The visit to this Gandhi Nilaya,
Mayura Pine Top Nandibetta, Nandi Hills, Andhra Pradesh, was a part of “Andhra
Pradesh and Karnataka Heritage walk”, from 25th to 28th
December 2025, organised by “எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடைக்குழு".
In 1927 and 1936, Mahatma Gandhi, during his visit to Bangalore, stayed at
this building. On the advice of his doctor, Dr Jeeraj Mehta, Gandhiji rested
here for 45 days to recover from his asthma and high blood pressure ailment. In
honour of Gandhi's use and stay at the diminutive building, it is named Gandhi Nilaya. This building is newly refurbished as a guesthouse for VIP's.
GANDHI NILAYA /
Mahatma
Gandhi travelled all over the country, stayed there, and held meetings and
events throughout his long struggle. In his final struggle, the entire India
was his field of action. Despite all this, he visited Karnataka 13 times and
spent about 240 days in Karnataka. It is special that he visited 'Nandi
Giridham' twice and spent a total of 65 days there.
His first
visit was from 20.4.1927 to 5.6.1927 for 45 days. Due to a mild stroke, it was
necessary to take a rest on the advice of the doctor. Gandhiji chose Nandi
Giridham for that. Since Gandhi was at Nandi Giridham, thousands of people used
to come to see him every day. More than two hundred people used to gather for
the evening prayers. The cool and pleasant climate of Nandi Hills was very
helpful in improving Gandhiji's health. Instead of the two months that the
doctors had said, Gandhiji returned healthy in one and a half months, which is
a testament to the greatness of Nandi Giridham.
His second
visit lasted for 20 days from 10.5.1936 to 30.5.1936. Because Gandhiji had a
great fondness for Nandigiri Dham, he chose it for his second stay as well. It
is said that during his stay, the entire Nandigiri Dham itself was decorated
like a fairground. Apart from Sabarmati and Wardha Ashrams, Gandhiji stayed in
Nandigiri Dham for the longest time to rest.
As Nehru
said, 'Gandhiji did not sit and become a temple of God; he walked and became a
holy land.' Today, Nandigiri Dham is also a centre of Gandhi's memory.
In February
1948, Gandhi's ashes were immersed in the Amritsar lake here. In Nandi Giri,
the `Cunningham Bhavan' where Gandhi stayed was renamed as `Gandhi Nilayam' in
1949. In 1951, Gandhi's portrait and statues were unveiled in Gandhi Nilayam.
Gandhi stayed. He walked. It is everyone's duty to continue to protect Nandi
Giri by giving vitality to his health.
