PLACE             : Pattanam
TITLE              : Hero Stones / Sati Stones/ Thai Nadukal.
PERIOD           : 17th – 19th century
DETAILS         :

These three heroes and Thai Nadukal are located in different places in this village. These are identified and documented by (late) Thiru Sundaram Ayya of Coimbatore in 2012 and 2017. They were installed in this place in 2020.

In the Thai Nadukal, a lady is in a standing posture holding a child. Two cows/ buffalo are shown as hitting the lady. As per the local legend, the lady died due to being hit by the cattle. As per the historians, this Nadukal is the continuation of “Thai Deivam” worship. An inscription is found at the bottom of the Nadukal. The inscription reads as

குறோதி வருசம் அற்ப்பிசை மீ (மாதம்) 9 உ (தேதி)
முத்திலிவாட செட்டி உபையம்

As per the inscription, this Thai Nadukal may belong to 1724 CE or 1784 CE.

The first Nadukal is a Sati stone. The Hero is shown in a standing posture with anjali hastham. A spear-like weapon is shown on the back side of the hero. On the right side, two ladies are shown, and a lady with raised hands on the left side. One of the right sides is holding a toddy pot. The inscriptions are highly damaged and are not legible.

The third and the right side of the Thai Nadukal is a Sati stone. The Hero and the two ladies are shown in a standing posture with anjali hastham. A bow-like weapon is shown on the right side of the hero's shoulder. On the extreme right side, two more ladies are shown. What they are holding or in Anjali hastham is not legible.
