Sri Adhinarayana Perumal Temple / ஸ்ரீ ஆதி நாராயணப் பெருமாள் கோயில், நசியனூர்/ Nasiyanur, Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

In search of History – Nasiyanur in Kongu Nadu (ERODE DISTRICT). As per the inscription, the Present Nasiyanur was called Nasiyanur during the 15th century. This place comes under Melkarai Poonthurai Nadu, one of the  24 subdivisions of Kongu Nadu. Planned to visit  Sri Muventheeswaramudayar Shiva Temple, Sri Adi Narayana Perumal Temple, and Sri Muniayappan Temple. Could not visit Muniappan Temple, for want of time and location & guidance. Utilizing the opportunity of my official visit on 25th January 2016, and on the way to Chennai visited these two temples. Both temples are side by side on the Perundurai to Bhavani main road. Both the temples are managed by the HRCE Dept. with Local Gounder caste people. Well-maintained temples with recent renovations. The inscriptions are recorded by the Tamil Nadu Archeological Department, and Prof. Raju played a main role since he belongs to the Erode area.  Now these inscriptions are not in a readable condition. I was lucky to have the darshan of Lord Shiva and Perumal in the evening hours (Normally, the temples will have one kala pooja in the morning hours only).

LEGENDS
It is believed that Shiva exists in this temple in 4 yugas. In Satya Yuga (Krita Yuga) as Chella Nayanar, in Treta Yuga as Nalla Nayanar, in Dvapara Yuga as Paramathalai Andavar, and in this Kali Yuga as Pariya Marundheeswarar.

The temple’s theertham offered to devotees, especially to pregnant ladies, is believed to be a marunthu for a safe and natural delivery. Hence, Shiva is called Maruntheeswarar.

As per Sri Rudram, Shiva is the Physician who cures us from all illnesses, both physically and mentally. Hence, without plucking (in Tamil பறியாமல்), Shiva cures, called Pariya Marundheeswarar. There is a saying that

மருந்து மருந்து அறியா மருந்து அறியா வினை தீர்த்த பறியா மருந்து

This saying is written in the temple, which means that even though the medicines available are meant for curing illness, Shiva worship can cure the Karmas of human beings.

As per the sthala purana, Shiva took the form of Sarabam to reduce the violence and aggression of Maha Visnu in the Narasimha avatar, due to the killing of Hiranyakashipu. Shiva took the Sarabeshwarar form at Thirubhuvanam and ended the ferocity of Sarabam at this place. The Shiva lingam is also called Saraba Lingam.

It is believed that this temple is a Naga dosha nivarthi sthalam and also a Rahu and Ketu parihara sthalam.

As per the sthala varalaru, this place was called Pattamangai. Since Shiva’s kept his thiruvdi, called “Patta,” and he relieved the curse of the 6 Mangais, called Patta Mangai, which has been corrupted to Pattamangalam.

On Mount Kailash, the Six Karthigai Penkal requested Shiva to teach them the ashtamasiddhis. During the process, they listened without full concentration. Angered, Shiva cursed them to be here for 1000 years, covered with stone and leaves under the Peepal Tree. After 1000 years, Shiva, as Guru, came to this temple, relieved them from the curse, and taught the ashtama siddhis.

After killing Hiranyakashipu, Maha Vishnu came to the temple to get rid of Brahmahathi dosha. He worshipped Shiva with Ponnanganni spinach, and Shiva gave darshan in the month of Margazhi and relieved him from the dosha. The spinach will be given as prasad during the Margazhi thirupalli ezhuchi. Considering this legend, this place was called Thirukannampathi.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri (a sacred bath will be done with 108 herbs on none of the kalam), etc.

TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and from 16.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.
