We thought of completing the third hill Kongar Puliyankulam Rock shelter with Jain Tirthankars & Beds with Tamizhi ( Brahmi ) inscriptions before lunch. It was told that this hill is on the ancient trade route and might have Kongars ruled this area. This hill is on the Madurai to Theni bus route and about 15 KM from Madurai.

The natural cave shelter has more than 50 beds carved in two rows. This indicates that large number of Jains stayed here or a Jain institution might have functioned here. The edge of the caves are shaped, such that the rain water will not enter in to the bed area. In addition to this there are three 1^st century Tamizhi ( Brahmi ) inscriptions engraved at the edge of the cave. The inscriptions speaks about the persons responsible for carving of these beds. And also the last two symbols indicates the, donation of Gold and land.

Before entering the cave on the left side there is bas-relief of Mahavir belongs to 9^th Century. It is believed that Acharya Acha Nandhi, who revived Jainism is responsible for carving this Mahavir Statue.

Mr Rajaguru of Ramnad, a Teacher and heritage enthusiast participated in this walk with his students. It was surprised to see one of his student read the Tamizhi- Brahmi inscriptions. After a brief meeting we closed our morning Ahimsa walk session and returned to Madurai Jains Heritage center for Lunch.

கொங்கர் புளியங்குளம்

பெருமாள் மலை தீர்த்தகரர்களையும் சமணர் படுக்கைகளையும் கண்ட பின்பு மதிய உணவுக்கு முன்பு அச்ச நந்தி அவர்களால் 9ம் நூற்றாண்டில் வெட்டு விக்கப்பட்ட மஹாவீரரையும் சமணர் படுக்கைகளையும் காண கொங்கர் புளியங்குளம் நோக்கி கிளம்பினோம். இம்மலை மதுரை தேனி சாலையில் உள்ளது. பண்டைய காலத்தில் வணிக வழியாக இருந்தது என்று கூறினர். மேலும் கங்கர்கள் இந்தபகுதியை ஆண்டு இருக்கலாம் எனவும் அதனால் இவ்விடம் கொங்கர் என் அழைக்கப்பட்டு இருக்கலாம் என்ற ஒரு கருத்து உள்ளது என்றும் கூறினர். சாலையில் இருந்து சுமார் 500 மீட்டரில் மலை மீது ஏற படிகள் அமைக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இந்த தொன்மையான இடம் தமிழ்நாடு தொல்லியல் துறையால் பராமரிக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றது.

குகையின் முன்புறம் இடது கைப்பக்கம் மஹாவீரர் புடைசிற்பம் அச்ச நந்தி அவர்களால் 9ம் நூற்றாண்டில் வெட்டுவிக்கப்பட்டு இருக்கலாம் என்று நம்பப்படுகின்றது.

இயற்கையான குகை இரண்டு பகுதிகளாகப் பிரித்து சுமார் 50 படுக்கைகள் இரண்டு வரிசைகளாக வெட்டப்பட்டு உள்ளது. குகையின் முன்புறம் மழைநீர் படுக்கைகளுக்கு செல்லாமல் இருக்க பாறையை குழைவு அமைப்பில் வெட்டி உள்ளனர். மேலும் அதில் முதல் நூற்றாண்டைச் சார்ந்த மூன்று தமிழி ( தமிழ் பிராமி ) கல்வெட்டுக்கள் இப்படுக்கைகள் வெட்டுவித்த விபரங்களைக் கூறுகின்றது. பொன், நிலம் தானமாக அளித்ததையும் குறிப்பிடுகின்றது. மூன்றாவது கல்வெட்டு சோழவந்தான் என்ற ஊருக்கு அருகே உள்ள பாகனூரைச் சேர்ந்த “பேரதன் பிடன்” என்பவனால் பொன் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட செய்தியைத் தெரிவிக்கின்றது.

இந்த மரபு நடைக்கு ராமநாதபுரத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஆசிரியரும் தொன்மை ஆர்வளருமான திரு ராஜகுரு அவர்கள் தன் மாணவிகளுடம் பங்கு கொண்டார். அதில் 9ம் வகுப்பு படிக்கும் ஒரு மாணவி தமிழ் பிராமி எழுத்துக்களைப் படித்துக்காட்டி எல்லோரையும் வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்தினார். ஸ்ரீதரன் அப்பான்டைராஜ் அவர்கள் உரைக்குப் பிறகு மதிய உணவுக்கு மதுரை சமண பண்பாட்டு மையத்திற்க்கு கிளம்பினோம்.
