Hero and Sati Stones / Veerakallu / Nadukal / நடுகற்கள், at Karuppanna Swamy Temple, Keelakuyilkudi, / Nagamalai Pudukottai, Madurai District, Tamil Nadu.

…. A Continuation post to Sri Palani Andavar Temple, Thiruparankundram
05th May 2018
On the first day of our Ahimsa Walk on 05th May 2018, our first visit was to see the Mahavir and Tirthankaras on the Samanar Malai at Keelakuilkudi, Nagamalai Pudukottai.  Sri Karuppasamy Temple is at the base of the hill.  It was said that a Tirthankara statue is inside a shrine and worshiped as a Hindu God. The Temple Complex has shrines for the Poorna and Pushkala sametha Ayyanar, Perumal, and small Village deities. In front of the Ayyanar shrine are his  vahana elephant, Balipeedam, and a Deepa Sthambam. The Deepa sthambam has 12th to 13th-century inscriptions.

It was interesting to note that there are three hero stones, a sati stone, and a heroine stone for a lady who holds a pot in her left hand.  Although the temples or the shrines seem to be of recent period, the inscription says that these hero stones are erected for the hero who fought & died during the  1311 CE, Malik-kafur invasion. The shrines for the hero are Pottukazhuvathevar alias Peyandithevar (a Sati stone with his wife and belongs to Kuttipichan thevar’s son Pottukazhuvathevar’s sect ), AndakkaL, Kazhuvanathan, Virumandi- Kuttipichan (belongs to Keelakuilkudi Muthuveeran sect).
