....a Continuation post to Mahavir and Jain Beds with Brahmi Inscriptions at Kongar Puliankulam

After lunch at Madurai Samanar Heritage Centre, we started our 53^rd Ahimsa Walk, the first day’s fourth visit to Thiruparankundram. In this Thiruparankundram visit, it was planned to visit the Jain’s Beds, Mahavir & Parshvanath bas-reliefs, and a Rock cave on the back side of the Hill. 

திருபரங்குன்றம் மலையில் மூன்று இடங்களைக் காண அவகாசம் வேண்டும் என்ற காரணத்தால் குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்திற்கு முன்பே மதிய உணவிற்குப் பிறகு மதுரை சமணர் பண்பாட்டு மையத்தில் இருந்து கிளம்பினோம். இந்தமலையில் உள்ள சமணம் சார்ந்த பாரம்பரிய சின்னங்கள், பார்சுவநாதர் சிற்பம், மேலும் சமணர் படுக்கைகளை காண்பதே இன்றைய நான்காவது மலை அஹிம்சை நடையின் இலக்கு.

JAINS BEDS, THIRUPARANKUNDRAM

First, our visit was to the Jain’s Beds. This Jain heritage site is being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI). Steps are neatly constructed during 1962-63. The Beds are made in two levels. It was said that there are Tamil vatteluthu inscriptions. Considering the number of beds, this place might be important, and many Jains stayed here. The Jain monks practiced  medical services. The pit for grinding of herbal leaves is evidence of the same.

முதலில் நாங்கள் சென்றது சமணர் படுக்கைகளைக் காண. இது மத்திய தொல்லியல் துறையால் பராமரிக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றது. 1962-63 களில் மேலே ஏற படிகள் மத்திய தொல்லியல் துறையால் கட்டப்பட்டது. இயற்கையான குகையில் இரு தளமாக படுக்கைகள் வெட்டப்பட்டு இருந்தது. படுக்கைகளின் எண்ணிக்கைகளைக் காணும் போது இங்கு ஒரு சமண பள்ளி நடந்து  இருக்கலாம் என்று தோன்றுகின்றது. மேலும் மருந்து அரைக்கும் குழி, சமண துறவிகள் மருத்துவமும் பார்த்து இருக்கலாம் என்று கருத வாய்ப்பு உள்ளது. இக் குகையில் தமிழ் வட்டெழுத்து கல்வெட்டுக்கள் இருப்பதாகவும் கூறினர்.

ROCK CUT CAVE TEMPLE.

Then we visited the rock-cut cave temple, where the sunken-cut reliefs of Hindu gods are available in the inner and outer walls of the rock-cut cave are available. One of the inner walls bears the Pandya period inscriptions. As per the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), this cave is called Umai-Andar Cave Temple, which belongs to the 8^th century and was reused during medieval times.  This rock-cut cave temple suffered damage during the Jaina-Brahminical conflict.   We couldn’t find any trace or evidence of a Jain temple existing in the rock-cut cave.

திருபரங்குன்றம் மலையின் பின்புறம் உள்ளது இக் குடவரைக் கோவில். மத்திய தொல்லியல் துறையின் கட்டுப்பட்டில் உள்ளது. ASI  அறிவிப்பு பலகையின் படி இக்கோவில் உமை ஆண்டார் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகின்றது. இது 8ம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சார்ந்த பாண்டிய மன்னர்களால் வெட்டப்பட்டது எனவும், சமணர், சைவ மோதல்களின் போது பெருத்த சேதத்திற்க்கு உள்ளாகியது எனவும் அறிய முடிகின்றது.  குகையின் உள் சுவற்றில் பாண்டியர் கால தமிழ் கல்வெட்டுக்கள் காணக் கிடைக்கின்றது. குகையின் உள் சுவரிலும் வெளிபக்க சுவரிலும் குடைந்து வெட்டபட்ட சைவ கடவுளர்களின் சிலைகள் பின்னமான நிலையில் இருக்கின்றது. சமணம் சார்ந்த தடையங்கள் எதுவும் இக்குகையில் காணப்படவில்லை.

PARSHVANATH BAS-RELIEFS, THIRUPARANKUNDRAM

These bas-reliefs are inside a Palani Andavar Temple on the foothill of Thiruparankundram. The temple was constructed during the Nayak period at an elevated level than the Parshwanath Tirthankara bas-reliefs are carved, leaving a small space.  Found the space was partially filled with debris, and rainwater also stagnated. We couldn’t approach the bas-reliefs due to the foul smell emanating from the pit. Our Ahimsa team took this as a challenge and cleaned the area, thanks to Mr. Selvamani Sir, Mr. Sridharan Appandairaj, Mr. Sugumaran Dhanajayan, Mrs.  Sasikala Devi & Family. அடுத்து நாங்கள் சென்றது மகாவீரர் மற்றும் தீர்தங்கரர் புடை சிற்பங்களைக் காண. இவை  நாயக்கர் காலத்தில் கட்டப்பட்ட பழனி ஆண்டவர் என்ற கோவிலினுள் இருக்கின்றது. கோவில் பிற்காலத்தில் கட்டப்பட்டதால் சிறிது இடம் மட்டும் விட்டு கட்டி இருக்கின்றனர். அந்த சிறிய இடத்திலும் குப்பைகள் கொட்டப்பட்டு மழைநீர் தேங்கி துர்நாற்றம் அடித்தது. வேதனையுற்ற அஹிம்சை நடை உறுப்பினர்கள் குறிப்பாக திரு செல்வமணி, திரு ஸ்ரீதரன் அப்பான்டைராஜ், திரு சுகுமாரன் தனஞ்சயன், திருமதி சசிகலா குடும்பத்தினர் சுத்தப்படுத்தினர். நன்றிகள் பல.

Since I have to attend a pre-committed program on Sunday, the 6^th of May, 2018, I couldn’t participate in the second day’s Ahimsa Walk.  Say goodbye to everybody and leave Madurai for the next day’s program. I extend my sincere thanks to the organizers of this 53^rd Ahimsa walk, the in-charge of Madurai Samanar Heritage Center, and the co-participants. Thanks to all once again, and hoping to meet at the 54^th Ahimsa Walk.

அஹிம்சை நடையின் இரண்டாவது நாள் 06ந்தேதி மே மாதம் 2018 அன்று முன்பே ஒத்துக்கொண்ட வேலை இருந்ததால் அஹிம்சை நடை அன்பர்களுக்கு நன்றி கூறிவிட்டு என் பயணத்தைத் தொடர்ந்தேன். 54ம் அஹிம்சை நடை பயணத்தில் கலந்து கொள்வோம் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் விடை பெறுகின்றேன்.. நன்றிகள் பல  அனைவருக்கும்.
