May 2018.
We
had been to this temple during our Thiruvaiyaru Heritage Walk. Utilizing the opportunity
of the lunch break, we are able to spend about 2 hours in this temple. This
temple was built between Kollidam and the Cauvery River in the middle of a Plantain/banana grove.
As per the Historians and the Tamil Nadu Govt Archaeology Department display this is one of the ThiruGnanasambandar Padal Petra Sthalam on the north side of River Cauvery. ( 72nd Sthalam ).

Some
of the important details are as follows.
The
temple faces east with a Rishabam on the base of a platform of the old mandapam. The pillars of this muka mandapam are dumped on the north side of the temple. The sanctum sanctorum
consists of sanctum, antarala, and artha mandapam. Only the base of the Mukha mandapa exists now. Chandikeswarar is on the north
side near komukha.
The
temple is somewhat similar to SrinivasaNallur, near Trichy Shiva temple. Adhistanam is Kapothabandha adhistanam with
miniature reliefs on the Kandapatham and Vedhikandam. Viyyalavari is just above
the kapotam. The pilasters are with 8 face Vishnu patha pillars, hanging mala, kumbam,
kalasam and podhigai. The vimana
above the sanctum exists up to the first level.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the
inscriptions, this temple’s Lord Shiva is called Thiruchadaimudi Mahadevar or Thirukadaimudi Mahadevar. The temple
has 21 inscriptions of Thellatrerintha Nandhivarman-III ( 846 - 869 CE ) and
Nrupathunga Varman ( 865 - 906 CE) of Pallava Kings, Chozha King Parantaka – I (907 - 950 CE) and Ko Ilango
Mutharaiyar.
One of the inscriptions speaks about the Village
Court, where Arukai merchants, Boatmen, and Velalar gave donations in terms of gold for
burning perpetual lamps. Gold was also donated to this temple for conducting 7
7-day Masi Maga festival by Nandhivarmans’ wife & Queen Madevi Adikal Kandan
Maran Paavai. Pazhuvettarayar’s daughter Parantakan Devi Arulmozhi Nangai also
donated a gift to this temple. The Archaeology Department claims that this temple is one of the Thevara sthalam, hymn sung by ThirugnanaSambandar.
Once this temple was in dilapidated
condition and refurbished to some extent by the state archaeological department regular poojas were conducted.
